Hi,
I've been working on recording and uploading video to Commons lately,
and I'm wondering what to do with the original files that my camera
recorded (in a proprietary format unfortunately).
So, is WebM/VP8 suitable for long-term archival? Or does it make sense
to backup the original files for use later down the road?

Just an update -- background transcoding has been restarted now that we're
switched back to the Virginia data center where the majority of encoders
are.
Converting the lat 1/3 of videos to VP9 should be finished by the end of
November, approximately. At that point we'll probably start removing the
old VP8 versions to free up space.

Thanks, this looks like a nice addition that will cumulatively save people
a lot of time if used widely. I'm forwarding to the Commons and Wikitech
lists. I haven't tested it but the concept looks good.
