Dear Wikimedians,
We are happy to announce that the 2015 Picture of the Year
competition is now open.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the
international Wikimedia Commons community. From professional animal and plant shots to
breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant
images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems,
diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human
portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two
rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many
images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten
overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited
number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want
to become the Picture of the Year.
Users must vote with an account meeting following requirements: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2015/Rules
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2015 page on Wikimedia
Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2015
Round 1 will end 10 April 2016.
Thanks,
POTY 2015 committee
Hello everyone,
Cross-posting User:Odder's message from Commons VP: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Crowdfunding_campai…

Hi everyone, just as I did with the crowdfunding campaign for Jee, I think it important to let you know that a crowdfunding campaign is currently running to support one of our contributors, photographers and administrators, Rehman; Azeez is the organiser and author of a truly fabulous video presenting Rehman's work on energy-related subjects in Sri Lanka. The campaign is being run on Indiegogo's Generosity site, and was co-ordinated at User talk:Rehman/Campaign (in case anyone wants to comment). I'm sure that Rehman will deeply appreciate even the tiniest of donations, if anyone is willing to support his campaign. odder (talk) 22:07, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you,

For those Wikimedians with cameras, particularly for those who go to
conferences like Wikimania where I believe that camera theft has happened
in the past, I'd like to make the suggestion that you consider purchasing
insurance for your cameras, lenses, and any related gear.
If you have homeowner's or renter's insurance then you may be able to
purchase supplemental coverage for your camera that will travel with you
outside of your home, possibly including international travel.
Take care,
Pine
Awesome, thanks Jordan! :)

Hi folks,
I've been working on the Upload to Commons Android app[1] for the past few
months as an Outreachy project (which was recently completed
successfully[2] :)). A few changes were made to the app to make
categorization of pictures easier, via suggestion of nearby categories and
more flexible category search. However, there are lots of improvements
(documented on our GitHub page[3]) that we couldn't fit into the scope of
the Outreachy project. I would love to be able to continue working on the
app to improve it further - hence an IEG proposal.
My IEG proposal for the app involves:
- Fixing long-standing bugs and looking into old crash reports to try and
prevent them from recurring, to provide a smoother user experience
- Making several enhancements to the app to make it more user-friendly and
newbie-friendly, new location-based features (e.g. a list of nearby
articles lacking pictures), and further enhancing categorization.
- Increasing awareness of non-Wikimedians about this app to grow the
contributor base
Several of the proposed features are based on previous suggestions by
users, and I would very much appreciate more feedback and suggestions! If
you are interested, please do take a look at the current proposal[4], feel
free to ask questions and make new suggestions on the Discussion page, and
review it as you see fit. If you would like to be part of the project,
volunteers and additional advisors are always welcome.
Thank you so much!
