Hi all,
I'm sure the organisers have a lot on their plate right now so I don't want
to add any unnecessary pressure, I was just wondering if any thought had
been given to an organised excursion of Wikimedians to Auschwitz during
Wikimania as Krakow seems reasonably close?
I know this is a sensitive topic and likely to be deeply distressing but
I'm sure many of us would find it worthwhile.
Best,
Harry
Dear all,
I am observing the inflow of programme submissions for Wikimania 2024 and I
could not be a happier programme lead than now. However, I know that there
are some session proposals that are still being developed, so we are
extending the deadline to submit your programme proposals until April 10,
2024, 12:00 UTC.
Make it the most memorable learning experience with other Wikimedians by
submitting sessions that are relevant to the Wiki-world and which bring the
Collaboration of the Open, this year's spirit, to Katowice, Poland, and
online!
Best regards
Wojciech Pędzich, Head of Programming, Wikimania 2024
Hello everyone,
The call for proposals for Wikimania 2024 is now open. We are looking for

collaborations across regions, languages, disciplines, and beyond? How are
you and your community contributing to building the open ecosystem?
Apply to lead a workshop, host a panel, present a poster, or run a tool
demonstration that helps us all see the power of openness and collaboration.
You can apply to speak in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format. More
information, including FAQs and the full list of questions from the call for
proposals, is available <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2024:Program>

Hello everyone,
I am writing to share with you the evaluation report for Wikimania 2023,
Wikimedia movement's largest activity, which took place virtually and in
person in Singapore, in August 2023. The report covers results from the
attendee and scholar surveys, as well as the impact of our communication,
social media and media strategies.
The report was written by a team of colleagues from the Wikimedia
Foundation Communications department, and you can find it here:
https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2023:Evaluation
Here is a brief summary of the main findings:
- Wikimania 2023 was the largest Wikimania to date, with 2866 Wikimedians
from 142 countries attending - 761 in person and 2105 remotely.
- The theme for the 18th Wikimania edition was Diversity. Collaboration.
Future., reflecting the goals and challenges of the Wikimedia movement in
the next decade, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- Survey respondents were highly satisfied with the event (over 90%), and
felt that it contributed to their learning and sense of belonging (over
90%).
- Scholarship recipients felt that the experience would encourage them to
share lessons learnt with their communities and continue to improve their
overall contributions to the movement.
- Communications strategies were utilized to raise awareness about
Wikimedia amongst youth in ESEAP, as well as the general public in the
region and beyond.
- Wikimania 2023 featured a rich and diverse program, with over 300 main
program sessions, the first ever WikiWomen Summit, a 5-day hackathon,
Wikimedia Basic workshops for beginners, and more.
I hope you enjoy reading the report and learning more about the outcomes
and impact of Wikimania 2023. Please feel free to share your feedback,
comments, and questions on the report's talk page:

This year’s theme will be “Collaboration of the Open”--a celebration of
the ways we work together, in the open and for the larger open movement,
to bring free knowledge to the world. We are working on finalizing the
venue and dates before the end of the year, but can confirm that
Wikimania will be held in Poland sometime between mid-July and mid-August.
To ensure that Wikimedians needing visas for Poland have enough time to
apply, we are starting the scholarships process now. Scholarships will
be available in two forms:
*
Full scholarship: travel, accommodation, and registration are provided;
*
Partial scholarship: accommodation and registration are provided.

Hi everyone!
It is my great pleasure to inform you that Wikimania 2024 will happen on 7-10
August 2024 at International Congress Centre
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Congress_Centre_in_Katowice>
in Katowice, Poland <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katowice>.
Katowice is a UNESCO City of Music
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Music_(UNESCO)>, home to many
cultural institutions and in 2024 it will be a European City of Science
<https://www.euroscience.org/european-city-of-science>. Situated in the
heart of the region, it highlights some of the best of Silesia–rich history
and folklore, interesting architecture, and distinct local language and
cuisine! Well-connected, it is also a great place from which you can
explore the rest of the country.
Wikimania Dates
The main part of Wikimania is scheduled to happen from 7th to 10th of
August. 6tf of August is already designated as a pre-conference about which
we will share more information later.
Why Katowice?
We decided to shift the location to Katowice from Kraków due to unforeseen
complications out of our control with our original selected venue. It was
critical for us to find an ideal event space for Wikimania with the right
facilities, provisions and a great location. We also wanted it to
accommodate more general space for informal catch-ups and hangouts, our own
bespoke areas and enough meeting rooms for all the event needs. We were
also looking for cities that would give a similarly exciting cultural
experience for attendees. We were able to find all of that at the International
Congress Centre
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Congress_Centre_in_Katowice>
in Katowice. We are confident that ICC will meet all of our event needs,
and that Katowice and the surrounding area will offer attendees an
enriching experience with its fascinating history, outstanding amenities, a
range of local cafes and restaurants, and rich cultural institutions–all
within walking distance to the main venue.
I would like to thank you all for your patience and excitement for the
upcoming Wikimania. We cannot wait to meet you all in Katowice next summer

Scholarships for Wikimania 2024 are open

and will close on the 18th of December. We look forward to receiving
applications from across our community and welcoming both scholars and
attendees to the wonderful city of Katowice!

Hi Everyone,
The compilation of all videos and presentation files are housed on
Wikimania wiki at https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2023:Program
The etherpad links are also there. Not all sessions have recorded notes or
it might have been written on a different name. The notes were scribed by
some of the participants on Wikimania scholarship.
Similar copies of the videos placed in playlists are on the Foundation's
YouTube account (https://youtube.com/@TheWikimediaFoundation) and on
Wikimania Facebook account. (
https://www.facebook.com/watch/100075922996558/1343055216309106/)
Some presentation files are on
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimania_2023_presentations .
Some speakers haven't uploaded their slides, but I am happy you inform you
that there are close to 200 Wikimania 2023 slides are already on commons.
Kind regards,
Butch
