Hello!
I have posted links to the room reservation forms for our two hotel
options in DC: <http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Accommodation>.
The two hotels we have group deals with are the Dupont Circle Hotel
and the State Plaza Hotel. The Dupont Circle is an incredibly cool
hotel with everything a traveling Wikimedian could want. The State
Plaza Hotel is not as awesome, but it is three blocks away from the
venue and costs less. (It's still a good hotel, all things
considered.) With both hotels, you are allowed to have a second person
stay with you for no additional cost—that way, you can split the costs
with someone.
We also have a sizable reservation at Hostelling International, but
due to the many people receiving scholarships we cannot open that
option up to the public right now.
We will be adding more options later, including more low-cost rooms as
well as links to cheap hotels in the suburbs. I understand that cost
is an issue for many attendees, so we are working to find
accommodations that will work for everyone.

James Hare

Dear All,
The deadline for early bird-rate registration for Wikimania 2012 has been
extended through April 30. Regular registration will begin May 1.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Michael Bashour
President
Wikimedia District of Columbia
Washington, DC, USA
For budget travellers there are much cheaper options available. I found
this http://www.hosteldc.com/reservations.htm# place offering shared dorms
at $24 a night. Though I don't know if its in a suitable part of DC for
Wikimania, but it does seem to me that the organisers could still arrange
budget accommodation. I suspect it would be better to try and block book
some convenient cheap hostels rather than try to negotiate discounts at
expensive hotels.
As for me, I'm beginning to think more in terms of E participation, will
there be live streaming?

Hi all
A number of fellow Wikipedians had noticed that
The early bird rate for this year's Wikimania Registration will not
available soon
on 23 Apr
However there is not yet any sign of announcement of the scholarship
So I wonder if the DC team would suggest definate-will-go applicants
register first
Then sort of reimbursing later if required?
lOOking forward to any reply from the DC OCs soon.

Dear organizing team,
Thanks for offering 4 check-boxes for the details on the badge! May I ask,
how will the details be presented? I think it'll be a useful piece of
information for many of us whose username is the same as our real name. If
it looks like
First Last
username
project
it'll be a bit redundant for us to have our name written exactly the same
way twice; but if it looks like
First Last
[[User:Username]]@project
then it'll be useful to have both.
Also, on the drop-down menu for project there is only wikipedia, wikibooks
etc. but not a choice of the language. Will that be a useful thing to have?
Deryck
Deryck has raised a fair point on real names on badges, as this would rise up during checking-in: for real names do you mean the one on documents or do you mean the one we are normally called? I'm usually called Alan but it's nowhere in my official identification papers bear that name! I'm not sure about the situation of Deryck but I supposed many Hongkongers could face a dilemma if a strict real name policy is pursued at the door!

Hotel prices seem too expensive.
I went back and checked the bid:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2012/Bids/Washington,_D.C.
It specificaly mentioned cheaper options - and to be specific - hostels for 48$ per night.
Most wikipedians can not afford much more (we are talking about 6 nights so 1t $180 we reach almost $1,000 for accomodations, without meals, and including flghts it may reach $2,500 per attendee).
I do not know how it is in your country, but in my opinion, most attendees can not afford that without full scholarships.

This is not impatience. Organization is just very late. Last year the
scholarships were announced end of March, four months in advance of
Wikimania 2011. Now it's only 81 days left for Wikimania 2012.
It's a bit like the hotels, "almost done" since the beginning of April.
