Hi,
Here are two useful links from Jordan Tourism Board:
http://www.visitjordan.com/visitjordan_cms/GeneralInformation/GettingAround… - List of border crossing. My advice: Either go eastwards across the Lower Galilee from Haifa to Beit Shean, cross the border at Sheikh Hossein Bridge and continue southward in Jordan, or go southward along the Israeli coast, then go to Beersheba, then on the road to Eilat cross the border at the Wadi Araba Crossing (Petra is quite near). Don't use the Allenby/King Hossein Bridge because it is the main gate from and into the West Bank, which means three kinds of authorities (Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian), more people waiting in line, more forms to fill in and more potential headaches. According to this site, Jordanian visas are issued on the spot at the crossing. Note - unlike the Israeli authorities, the Jordanian authorities insist on stamping the passport itself.
http://www.visitjordan.com/default.aspx?tabid=63 - Views of Petra on that site. It is considered one of the most remarkable sites in the region, and the most prominent tourist attraction in Jordan. Jordan is tourist-friendly and quite cheap. Most people can communicate in English. Please note that August falls on Ramadan, so most people you are going to meet in Jordan will be fasting during daylight hours. Be considerate. One more warning - this is August and Petra is in the middle of the desert. Temperature might rise as high as 40 centigrade. Cars, buses and most rooms are air-conditioned, but when you walk outside, cover yourself well with light clothes and drink a lot (but not in front of those who fast).

Hi,
I've got insomnia since this June and use sleeping pills, and
unfortunately I forgot to pack them into my luggage at the last
minute.
Under certain conditions I can have someone in Japan ship them to me,
and it takes at least 5 days; so to arrive on August 6 at earlier.
Questions related:
- Can we receive such emergency needed goods in Haifa, at our own name
c/o Conference office whatsoever? If not, do any other possibilities
avail?
- Can we at dorms make our stay longer than reserved atm?
Cheers,

Just wanted to let those of you already here or landing today: yesterday and
today are considerably hotter than normal (perhaps the worst in the whole
summer...), and the forecast is for temperatures to gradually decline over
the coming week, starting already tomorrow. It will be about 5 to 6 Celsius
degrees cooler by this time next week.
Remember to drink *a lot* and wear a hat when out in the sun!

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur.
could somebody knowledgeable please put the most important information
into one or a couple of emails please, most importantly phone
number(s), location / addresses of dorms, venues, hotels and a brief
description how to get there, maybe with a distinctive title so these
email(s) can be easily found on a mobile?
Did we have this already here?
http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/InnovativeIsrael/Wikimania-hits-Haifa-14-JUL-2011…
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a big article on Wikimania on their
website. Amazing.
Maybe something worried participants can print out and take with them.
Guess the border controls should recognize their government's website...

Hello,
Some Wikimaniacs already landed in Israel, but most of you will be
flying in the next few days.
The travel agent who sold you the plane ticket must have told you
this, but let me re-iterate it, because it's very, very important:
When you go to Israel, arrive to the airport three and a half hours
before the departure! For example, if your flight departs at 22:00,
you must already be at the airport at 18:30. Yes, that is a lot of
time. It is needed because of security checks, although it doesn't
mean that you'll spend three hours in interrogations and X-rays -
you'll probably spend most of it reading or browsing the duty-free
store. Nevertheless, don't arrive late!
The same is true for the return flight: When you go from Israel back
home, arrive at the Ben-Gurion airport three and a half hours before
the departure.
Make sure you take a good book to spend the waiting time productively! :)
