It may be, but it's not the way it's normally done. Footnote/endnote markers normally go right next to the thing being marked. Also, as I just pointed out in reply to Steve, the spaces are breaking spaces, and word-wrap may end up putting the footnote marker at the start of the NEXT line. That's certainly not more readable.
Very true. The problem for me, as I mentioned in the part you didn't quote, is the gratuitous use of square brackets. If reference links were to be formatted print-style as small raised numbers, that would help a lot in terms of reducing clutter.
