There's two kinds of ownership. One is paternal, one is possessive.
"That's my article, I created it, I'm very pleased with it" vs.
"That's my article, get your hands off it"
The former is what contests like this tend to create, and it's
harmless (and in many ways to be encouraged). I'm not sure a contest
like this would produce the latter any more than the normal
article-rating process does...

I agree; any increase in articles being improved to G/FA status would
increase WP:OWN problems, and this contest wouldn't do it more than, say, a
big push to 2000 FAs that was advertised everywhere (though this contest
might be more effective, and so would create proportionally more problems).
