Why not make it an opt-in on your userprefs page?

If we do make it a default, can we make it less of a javascript hack
and more of an integrated feature? My computer and/or browser has
difficulty loading popups, whereas it has no difficulty with similar
popping up action on other sites (such as livejournal and.. other..
sites..).
