Sounds like [[m:instruction creep]]. Admins don't even bother logging
their page protections in practice.
Oh they do, for the most part. That *is* important simply because page
protection doesn't automatically expire. Until recently we had some logged
protections that went back weeks. Khmer Rouge was protected for 90 days out
of 100, probably as part of a deliberate strategic move by some of the
editors.
And when I checked further I found some unlogged protections that went out
to the middle of August. It isn't good for the wiki to have temporary
protection drag on for months.
