I have a feeling Dan was referring to Gmail threads, which do get mucked up.

Mailers don't use the presence of "Re:" in the subject line to organise threads. Provided the user replies in the usual manner, it shouldn't matter if the subject line is modified, in this respect anyway.
However, El C's last post didn't contain an In-Reply-To header, which is the actual cause of the new thread.
