Edith died Friday. She was buried on Sunday. Edith, together with Angelene, performed cooking miracles for us at the Lauderdale House dormitory from '70-81. She loved cooking for Shakespeare at Winedale students. Was indeed very proud to have been a part of our experience. Her obituary carried that message. I'm sure many of you will remember Ronnie Klump, her son, who worked on the property planting and mowing, and her grandson, Russell Klump, who performed in several plays, CE, ADO, MV, with my son Jonathan. Lots of good memories there.

Oh Doc, I am so sorry. I have such good memories of Edith and Angelene in 78 and 79. Such good people. Was Ronnie the one who taught us how to polka? Such vivid memories of all of them! My condolences to you, dear Doc.

Yes, Maria. Ronnie was the one. Angelene is still with us, though confined to home care. Thanks for your message.

What sad news. I remember Edith so well. She had such a distinctive voice which I can still hear. If I recall, she was also the organist for the Lutheran church in Round Top on that old wooden pipe organ. Ronnie , her son and Liz, his wife, were also such an important part of our lives at Winedale. Edith worked tirelessly in that kitchen at Lauderdale House along with Angeline, providing such memorable meals which we shared at the big table. I loved spending a little time watching them in the kitchen performing, as Doc said, simple miracles. Lentil soup. Chicken in a Garden. We should all remain thankful for the staff and everything they did, adding to the magic of our time at Winedale. My prayers are with Ronnie and his family. Dear Doc,
I know these names, through Mary and Alice and Terry, also others--some great stories. I'm so sorry. Molly

Alas, so sad to hear of Edith's passing. She and Angeline were such a presence at Winedale, always making us feel special, always working. I can still smell the cookies baking. And all the Klumps!! such lovely people, so many memories of kegs and pecan trees, barbeque and polkas.
I like Craig's idea, a Day of Remembrance. I also love the cedar plaques posted in the Barn since we probably won't all be able to have benches, although the thought still lingers.... Cedar has such delicious properties and would add a lovely ambience. Great idea, Doc! Maybe on Remembrance Day we could bring sprigs of lavender, rosemary, thyme and other herbs or flowers to decorate the plaques.
Apparently we should get started. Time is a very bankrupt! Love to all, Joy

Dear Doc, I'm so sorry about this news. I remember Edith and the wonderful food she cooked. And it makes me happy to think about her enjoying cooking for us. Love, Leigh
I remember Edith Klump ever so fondly - my first weekend at the Barn in February 1987 was a blustery one, but Edith welcomed us with an entire roast turkey dinner with all the fixins. It was like going home to Grandma's (Shakespeare was the bonus). She kindly shared her recipe for Oatmeal Cake with me that day, and I plan to bake one very soon in memory of a great lady:
Edith Klump's Oatmeal Cake, from Winedale, February 27, 1987
1 cup oatmeal 1 stick butter 1 1/3 cup boiling water
Pour boiling water over the oatmeal and butter mixture. Let sit for 20 minutes.
2 eggs 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup white sugar
Cream eggs and sugar together.
1 1/3 cup flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon each: cinnamon, cloves, allspice
Mix dry ingredients. Add to sugar/egg mixture. Combine with oatmeal mixture. Bake at 350 degrees (in a glass pan; 375 degrees in metal). 12-inch by 16-inch pan.
Topping: Melt 1/3 cup butter; add 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3 teaspoons milk, 1 cup nuts, and 1 cup coconut (boil it?). Before cake is done, frost the top and broil the frosting, as a glaze.

Thanks for this, Stephanie. What a wonderful way to remember Edith. I'll be baking one too.
