that former Camp Shakespearean '06, Rosalind Faires, is a member of
this summer's Shakespeare at Winedale class. This is a super moment
for all of us. Not only is Rosalind the first Camper to be accepted
into the university group, I think that she is the first second
generation student to participate. Dad Robert is partially
responsible. And she will be performing in The Winters' Tale, as she
did in Camp. Deja vu all over again.
Doc
Hey everyone --
Here's an article on the UT home page about the new book that features Alice Gordon's definitive article on the early days of Shakespeare at Winedale, "Barn Dance." You don't want to miss this -- Alice's story is brilliant and the book is filled with other fascinating pieces on everything from the firing of Homer Price Rainey to the story of when Hank the Hallucination ran for UT student body president. Just flipping through the beautifully designed edition and looking at all the photos (including a great one of Doc and Terry) makes you proud to be a Longhorn, and a Winedaler -- !
There is a link at the bottom of the article to the UT Press site for the book with ordering info -- only $25 or so, well worth it.

Some of the most amazing moments in the Winedale theatre barn have been engineered by young people (ages 11 to 16) participating in the Camp Shakespeare program. People are still talking about the zombie version of the induction scene in The Taming of the Shrew. And, as my daughter will attest, the friendships made among the campers over the course of two weeks are truly special.
Please consider sending a contribution to Camp Shakespeare for operational expenses and scholarships. The goal this year is to raise from Winedale alums an additional $15,000, which will directly benefit the program and make a huge difference for children who can't afford the camp tuition. I am hoping that you will join me in participating in this Camp Shakespeare effort.
If you choose to do so, please send your check in any amount to:
Doc Ayres, Camp Shakespeare, P.O. Box 202, Round Top, TX 78954.
Please make the check payable "to" The University of Texas and mark it "for" Camp Shakespeare.
Kind regards,
Bob Pees

for Bob, so I hope that you give him all of your support.

I double ditto and second everything that has been said about Camp Shakespeare. It has become truly an amazing ever-increasing plethora of remarkable talent. I've wondered if there were perhaps something in the water which continues to cultivate incredible performances by such tiny creatures! How can this be? What is the secret? Am I awake or did I just dream this? Or am I sleeping still? In brief, every time I go out there is more impressive than the last. These munchkins appear human; however, much of their actions make one doubt. They have an uncanny intelligence and secret communication amongst themselves. There is an old one in the group as well as a couple of younger assistants who do his bidding. Watch him closely for I think he has the secret oracles of the munchkins. I must confess I watch him intently each time and he always outwits me, like trying to catch Santa Claus in action. It's incredible how entertaining these tiny ones are. How they can learn mega lines and deliver them trippingly on the tongue, lines that almost put me in my grave! How they fly around the stage with so much energy one is sure they will levitate at any moment. I can only tell you these tiny ones hold the keys to your hearts. Some things in life you don't want to miss. Men and women in Philadelphia and New York, Florida and Oakland now abed shall curse themselves and hold their manhoods and/or womanhoods cheap that they were not here to see another Camp Shakespeare. I'll look for your faces in the crowd! Tarry not for Time is definitely not on your side. Thine by Yea or Nay,Joy Howard MarvinOldest ambulatory graduate...
Thanks to Robert Pees for his initiative in this fund-raising effort.
Please send the checks to me at PO Box 202, Round Top, Tx. 78954, the
address at the bottom of his letter. While it may be possible to do
this on-line, I urge you to send contributions to me directly. I have
kept records of every contribution to Camp since its inception and
would like to continue doing that since I manage my own budget. I
also appreciate hearing from all of you and want to stay in personal
touch. I am never contacted about on-line contributions.
Thanks for your understanding.
Doc
Well said, Bob, it is that time again.
I'd like to add that even small contributions (a shout-out to all you teachers and social workers and artists!) make a big difference in building a scholarship for a kid from a low-income family who otherwise would never have this learning and growing opportunity.
Last summer two very deserving students from low-income families in Gonzales, Texas, were able to attend Camp, thanks in large part to assistance from the Winedale family. Doc works very hard to build two very diverse ensembles each summer, and all the students benefit from this diversity.
Do it today, right now, while you are thinking of it, pick up that phone, or rather pen....!
I think there is also a way to donate online -- I will check on this and send a followup email.
ALSO, I would like to strongly encourage all of you to support this program not just financially, but also in person by attending one or more of the performances. You don't have to be a parent of a Camper -- or even a former student at Winedale -- to be stunned at the quality and beauty of the work and play. Magical. Ask Jerald Head and Joy Howard, for starters. Very much worth a plane ticket, you New Yorkers and others far-flung. You won't regret it. And it can be a mini-reunion.
As the buttons used to say: Shakespeare is Alive and Well at Winedale, TX.
See you there in June and July,
Clayton S.
