Covering the Barker Beat is no easy task -- I need roller skates to come up with him!
See the link for the latest big news. Congrats to director Michael Haneke and Boppin' Barker and all the SPC team.

Hey y'all --
It takes some searching to find the College of Communication commencement on the College Ticket site, so here's a link to save you some time. If it doesn't work, you can do a search on the site for May 18, University of Texas, commencement. As of now, it's still archived and viewable at no charge.
In addition, I'm attaching a transcript of the address.
I have no idea how long this site will archive the event -- any of you high-tech folks know how we might grab a bootleg copy...? I've asked someone at the College to check into whether they will archive it somehow themselves, no word yet.
cheers,
cs

Hey everyone --
Here's a bit of Winedale in the springtime, the only pretty ring-time. These wonderful photos give you a bit of a sense of what the 2011-12 Shakespeare at Winedale Outreach kids were up to on April 28 as they filled the grounds of Winedale with words, songs, play, and great fun.
They were taken by the mom of a Camp Shakespearean -- Caroline Poe, a terrific photographer. Check out the slideshow! Her daughter Ly will be in the second session of Camp this year, I believe.
Enjoy! And hope to see you out there soon.
Love,
cs

Fyi, the whole graduation is viewable on line at www.collegetvticket.com<http://www.collegetvticket.com>. i watched it live and its still available__ just checked. Michael was WONDERFUL. Could not see Doc on line, but could feel his presence when Michael talked about his importance in his life... i think there are about 15 minutes of procession, then the dean talks (i loved his too) then a student for a short time, then michael...
Sorry, michael, if this embarrasses you to spread the word of the broadcast :). But you were too good not to give everyone a chance to see you give your wonderful talk. It was so inspiring, funny, natural, fascinating, and SO Michael. as mother of a relatively recent (may 11 and currently-looking-for-work UT philosophy grad), i was actually made a bit teary by it. As i told michael earlier, he is the example i give when i encourage my kids to find their passion, and follow it. Now his talk is required listening for my son and daughter too.

Subject: [Winedale-l] Barker hits a homer
For those of you not able to be there yesterday, we can report that Winedale alum Michael Barker, looking quite distinguished and almost giddy (or dizzy?) at times in his mortarboard and academic robes, knocked one out of the Erwin Center with a great commencement address to all the College of Communication graduates and assembled family and guests. Doc looked equally grand as he sat onstage with the deans and faculty and provided that extra gravitas that only a veteran of many such ceremonies can bring (though inside sources confirm that even while onstage Doc was scheming on how to slip Michael's speech out from the yellow file folder the honoree was clutching somewhat anxiously -- never could quite distract Michael enough to pull it off).
There were plenty of wonderful Michael moments as he touched on the notion of the "transformative moment" and told of the encounters that helped shape his path, from landing at Winedale to meeting his wife Betsy (he recounted the day, the time, the place!) to being a student of the great Stella Adler to a dreamlike walk down the Yellow Brick Road (metaphorically and almost literally, as "Oz" had been filmed there) on his first trip with partner Tom Bernard to the soundstages of the major studios in L.A. to make the leap to forming Sony Pictures Classics.
His message to the kids: Nurture your desire, don't give up, be generous, learn to accept failure (he recounted an SPC flop that did this for him, finally) and -- be brave. Among my favorite lines: first, what I'm going to call Barker's Law (with apologies to that other brilliant Michael we know), his summation of what he learned at Winedale, that language could be "poetic and 100% true to life... at the same time," and second, at the closing, a quote from his successful and mostly self-taught father, who would worry aloud behind Michael's back long ago: "I wonder if seeing all these movies will ever amount to anything for the boy." "Here I am," Michael said simply, gesturing to the all surrounding him in the packed Drum. Yep!
Inspiring stuff from an inspiring guy.
Well done Michael! Speaking for the Winedale cheering section there yesterday, and I'm sure for all on this list too, we are proud of you and honored to count you as a friend and a fellow player.

Hey everyone --
I have been trying to invite all the Austin-area Winedalers to our annual Outreach luncheon this Saturday, but I'm sure I missed some folks.
If I did, and you might be able to come to th' event, could you send a note to me personally, and I'll get you an evite? It's only a few days away, but I thought I'd check in case I missed some of you and you might be able to make it.
The basic details:
"Friends of Outreach" Luncheon
Saturday, May 12
Noon to 2 p.m.
UT Student Activity Center (new building)
The event will feature about 25 minutes of student performances, and a chance to visit with some of our participating teachers.
Oh, and lunch!
Again, just zip me a note at cstromberger(a)mail.utexas.edu for more info and/ or an evite.
Thanks so much, my best to all of you,
cs
