Dear Alums. I had the wonderful pleasure of spending some time last week in a mini reunion with my fellow classmates of the class of 75-76, Laura Smith, Rob Lallier,Carol Martin, her hubby Sam, and Buddy Steele and his wife Maggie at Laura's home. We had a special evening reminiscing about our time in 1975 at Winedale, how it changed our lives, and despite protestations in previous discussions, how we feel was the best class in 40 years, (but we can put this aside for the moment.) Laura, (who is now a VP of UTMB, sorry Laura, I am still impressed,) was our resident photographer as well as a delightful comic actress and dear friend. She had access to a darkroom above the office across the road from the barn and what is now the ruins of Lauderdale House. She saved all of these images for 35 years and presented a disc of them for all of us to enjoy. These photos are iconic of our time there. There are certain pictures which are burned into my memory still 35 years later, and we were all immediately transported back to such a wonderful time with friends I hope to see in August. And my God, what a young and good-looking group of students. What happened? I am the worst with computers, so my partner Sergio helped me put them into an album which I hope we all can share, especially the classes of '75 and '76, but also for all those classes who followed as well. Not only do they capture he essence of our time there, but they are also just great photos I think everyone can enjoy. This is the link to the Mobile Me album. (There is a shot of a much later single photo which I could not figure out how to delete. Please ignore. As I said I am challenged.) Thanks so much to Laura for preserving this for us all.

Wow -- thanks Jerald, these are beautiful, and even more than before I wish I could have been there, even if I was only 13...!
ALL of the folks in these pictures helped build the space I was fortunate enough to inhabit and grow and learn in for a wonderful summer 8 years later. Thanks so much to all of you, living and departed.

Jerald, thanks. Bruce and all, I am tearing up at my computer this rainy morning after seeing Steven's photos and the beauty of the others. I first met Steven, perched like Puck at the end of Eri Weinstein's water bed, waking us up to go to Taco Village for breakfast. I was thinking that there are a number of exes (both supporters and students) no longer walking the stage of the earth and perhaps we could gather their photos and dedicate a little something to them at the reunion? Gotta go teach.

What an archive. These images are so moving--a real treasure to those of us who came home to Winedale in later years and never got to hang out at the store until after it had become the haunted (and still dear) old storage house that it is now. Browsing the slide show, I felt connected to the folks in the pictures because of the shared sense of place and the shared experiences of mask-making, improv, exercise, and just walking down the hiway wearing random costume pieces. I believe all Winedalers, including current ones, would love to see these ancestral pics.
Warm lovey hugs, Susan

Stan, I love this idea. I miss Donald so much. In NYC I have some of his poems, to go with pictures, if they are filed correctly. If not, I bet Terry has a bunch.

So how shall we proceed with our gesture of remembrance/dedication? I know we need to collect a list of the names and photos of those lost to us (at least in the flesh). I will gather the names, but I am not to be trusted with putting together any kind of photo sort of thing. All of my photo "albums" are in large boxes in the attic or flying about in various unorganized drawers.
So..... send me the names. I am reminded of the shepherd and the clown in Winter's Tale, when they happen upon the remains of Antigonus and Perdita the babe, with death and new life on the same shore. And I am reminded of the scene because Valerie, who played the clown, is gone.

I was thinking that there are a number of exes (both supporters and students) no longer walking the stage of the earth and perhaps we could gather their photos and dedicate a little something to them at the reunion? Hi Stan and all - I have of course been thinking of Valerie today, although that's not unusual, I think of her often. She was also Rosaline in Love's Labor's Lost, Lady Montague and the apothecary in R&J, and was with me as we dimmed the lights over the dead lovers (to Barber's Adagio for Strings). From that vantage point we got to hear and see Doc's marvelous Montague:
But I can give thee more: For I will raise her statue in pure gold; That while Verona by that name is known, There shall no figure at such rate be set As that of true and faithful Juliet.
But mostly she was a joyful friend, especially during my medical training. I have a great photo of her and will try to find it. We can raise a "statue" to her and the others.
Best,
Eric

Dear Jerald, I did not come to Winedale until 1979 but over time I had the great joy of getting to know many of the players from the 1975 class. It was a delight to see Terry, Alice, Mary and Donald. Another unexpected pleasure was to revisit the Lauderdale House.
My thanks to you and Laura Smith for sharing the photos from 1975 and 76. It reminded me that I should dig out my photos from 1979 and 80 to share with my own Winedale "playmates."
Fondly, Teresa

Jerald and Laura, This is such a gift, you have no idea. Thank you. This was the year we learned about the meaning of a true team, deep human character and self respect through playing. These so capture the place and the people and the work and the fun and an experience most never have in their lifetime. Thank you Doc and thank you Shakespeare.

Dear Alums. I had the wonderful pleasure of spending some time last week in a mini reunion with my fellow classmates of the class of 75-76, Laura Smith, Rob Lallier, Carol Martin, her hubby Sam, and Buddy Steele and his wife Maggie at Laura's home. You put the Winedale magic perfectly, Michael. And FYI to whole group, Jeralds foresight in posting these on web plus the memory-evoking impact of the photos posted so far inspired me to go back through all the negatives and digitize all that are even remotely decipherable -- blurry, scratched, otherwise. (Realized who knows what will generate a random memory, and these do no good whatsoever sitting in the 35 year old negative notebook that's been in my attic!) Uploaded all 288 (including the ones jerald has posted already) to my flickr account this morning before work and as soon as I get off today will put them in sets and share with whole list serve. (Tonight or early tomorrow) Additions to summer 75, many more from summer 76, plus pics from spring 75 and 76. And one proving that Doc takes grand prize for best 1970s pants... Michael, I was just reminded today in Alice's amazing essay of the Wiffie canal and had this overwhelming sense of time and place come over me. That coupled with amazing photo's have put me in such a misty state of mind I fear I must close the doors as my patients are not getting my best. Seeing the photo of Terry and Donald, as well as the one of you and Alice, well I am transported. Jerald

Hi everyone -- If I have mastered the Flickr share thing, here are the full set of negatives from 75 and 76 that I have carried around from attic to attic for the last 35 years. Many additions to the ones Jerald posted-- the memories evoked in our little mini 1975 reunion inspired me to go back through all the scratched up old negative files and add everything I have to the first set of negatives I put on disk. Go to this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lstraverso/sets/72157624458195374/ . Or paste it in your browser.. First 187 pictures are from Summer 75, Photos 188-271 are from Summer 76, and last 16 are from the Springs of 75 and 76.
I hope someone younger than me can figure out how to make photos, memories, writings, etc from all the Winedale years available in a single place. I'm too old -- this flickr and digital photo stuff is at the limits of my technological capabilities. (ie. Facebook scares me)
When I first looked through all my negatives (inspired by Jerald's early list-serve reminder that I might have photos), such wonderful, happy, touching memories came up. Went through them over and over by myself -- little tears, big laughs -- such incredible people, incredible times. And then when Jerald, Rob, Carol, Buddy and I looked at them together, the memories and feelings exploded (oh how we all miss Donald). Much like the spirit of WInedale, shared experience was way bigger than any individual one could ever be. .-- And finally when Jerald put that first "digitizing" on the web and many of you started writing in, the memories took over my available brain and heart space. Here's hoping this whole batch ignites more, and more years' photos start showing up.
Take care -- hope the link works!
Laura
Dear Jerald -
Have to join the chorus of thanks for these. While I wasn't present for these years, this was my era and it is wonderful to see familiar faces. And Donald, of course. Recalling how much fun we had working in the undergraduate English department office, making ridiculous jokes in French. I think we did some actual work as well.
I love to think that there really is a timeless tradition at Winedale, that students from other decades could imagine themselves in these photos as easily as I could. Maybe with different hair cuts. Or not.

My favorite image of the many wonderful images from 75&76 was the hilarious picture of Terry Galloway, dressed up like a Keystone Cop (with caterpillars for eye brows), staring fixedly into the eyes of a horse. Not sure who she is suppose to be, but my guess is that she's playing Dogberry -- because only Dogberry would give a horse the evil eye and suspect it of being a varlet.

Terry, et. al.: I remember Doc talking about that production of Much Ado. He seemed to really feel that that production was one of the highlights of the Summer Winedale Canon. Not just for that year but up to that time. I'm really sorry I missed it. And the more I get these emails, and especially the pictures, I'm really coming to realize how much I miss that extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime experience; how much I miss the people; and how much I miss the indescribable MAGIC. I don't think there's anything that can really compare with it. And Terry, I miss you most of all ("Banish plump Jack, and banish all the world"). I do hope you're well, and I can't wait to see you ("you whoreson, obscene greasy tallowcatch!"). Love,

Dear Jan!
I didn't know how to reach you until the amazing Mike Godwin tracked you and so many others down, and Jerald and all the Winedale celebrants of late brought us togheter in this email chain. And now I have more than just a reply of gratitude to this lovely message to impart to you, and the rest.
A couple of years ago Doc recommended me to an editor asking who might write an essay about the early years of Shakespeare at Winedale for the second volume of an anthology about life a the university over the years. (I'm not sure when UT Press is publishing it but am guessing next year.) With the help of a few Winedale friends I'm still in touch with regularly, and through memories and talking to Doc, I wrote that essay. You appear in it, Jan, and so does everyone else from that era in letter or spirit.

Dear Alice,
How beautifully, how completely you've caught hold of that elusive, ineffable entity that we've all been touched by at Winedale and wrestled it into words. Every paragraph, every anecdote, every sentiment, had me whispering "yes, yes, yes." Thank you so much for the care and consideration with which you've crafted. It is a rich and rare record of this extraordinary program, especially in its early, formative years.
With grateful admiration, Robert

Alice, this is some powerful stuff, evoking lots and lots of sense memories. You should feel justifiably proud. It made me wish that I had been there in 1975 - even though we did wonderful stuff through the windows, on the roof and across the supporting columns in '79 and '80 (I particularly remember rolling in a mud puddle that Godwin and I made behind the barn to transform into Tom O'Bedlam, and then crawling in the rafters while flinging tiny bits of red clay onto the darkened audience every time that I gestured). Bruce P.S. I showed this to Bekah who thought that it captured the camp experience as well (and made her wish that she could have been there in 1975...)

Beautifully written, and just as importantly, a valuable historical document for future generations.
I'm going to share it with Camper Augie too, and younger sis (7) Emma when she's ready (she asked yesterday, "Do you think they'd let me into Camp when I'm 8 or 9, if they know me...?").
Thanks again Alice for pouring your all into it.

Alice, I do not know what words I can add to the responses regarding your remarkable essay. It was so right on and beautifully written that anyone who has had the pleasure to be a part of this great experience will say you have captured the heart of our times there. I hate to read on the computer, so when I received this last week from Laura, I printed it at work so I could really read it, and like an old school Marm, marked it up with my comments, highlighters and Sharpies replacing red pencils. ( I have saved the brutal handwritten comments on my essays and journals by Doc, barely a line without comment. Keeps you humble. Really, I have not improved.) Like Robert Faires, I found myself writing "Yes" "Yes" but with "!"s" and "*'s" all in the margins. What is surprising to me is that the history is so vivid. Even in those very early years in '74 and '75 we were so aware of the stories shared by Doc and fellow classmates about the past , such as the lightening bugs with Carl, and Jan's Richard II, that I had a hard time today remembering if I was there during those performances or had been just a witness by way of history.. I do know I was there for the Wiffie canal, and just the mention of that made me a bit misty which seems to be my state in reliving those special times with the discovery of Laura's amazing collection of photos. I also remember that the stories were not told as an example of "back in OUR day..." but that this is what we can do here, if we work hard, know the play, and explore, that this is our opportunity, as each class has, to do something quite special. If we were lucky, it all clicked, perhaps just one time in a summer, maybe just for one performance, when the stars were aligned just so,our faux beards and burlap tunics were perfect, with that special open accepting audience, and we were so connected, that when it was over we all knew magic had been created in that special place. "For one brief and shining moment that was known as... " Oops, I slipped into my overly sentimental memories of the American musical theater. Thank you so much for expressing so beautifully our collective experience there. Is anyone else having trouble sleeping after seeing Terry in the "Bubbles" costume? It haunts me, as does Kevin swinging a large cross at her. A temptress but very disturbing. Love, Jerald On Jul 10, 2010, at 2:48 PM, Alice Gordon wrote:

iconic of our time there. There are certain pictures which are
burned
into my memory still 35 years later, and we were all immediately transported back to such a wonderful time with friends I hope to
see in
August. And my God, what a young and good-looking group of
students. What
happened? I am the worst with computers, so my partner Sergio helped me put
them
into an album which I hope we all can share, especially the
classes of
'75 and '76, but also for all those classes who followed as well.
Not
only do they capture he essence of our time there, but they are
also just
great photos I think everyone can enjoy. This is the link to the Mobile Me album. (There is a shot of a
much later
single photo which I could not figure out how to delete. Please
ignore. As
I said I am challenged.) Thanks so much to Laura for preserving this for us all.
