Hi all,
Has there been any movement on a Toronto meet up in February or sooner?
I recently wrote this article in a Toronto weekly about how there really needs to a Canadian chapter, and there's been some good response.
http://www.nowtoronto.com/news/webjam.cfm?content=177996
I didn't actually know so much work had been done already into Wiki Canada. It would be foolish to start a Toronto chapter with no Canadian chapter... Or would it?
Anyway, I have a bunch of Wikipedians emailing me about starting a Toronto chapter, wanting to meet soon, so I thought I should check in here...
Josh, we have filed the paperwork to form the charity. We are waiting to hear back from gov.ca

While unsurprised to hear this ex post facto, I'm curious about the current situation (and if there are any other 'official' communications channel I am also unaware of.) Also, I've been planning to travel to meet Ms Gardner when she meets with the chapter, but realised I still do not know when/where that meeting was intended to take place; has the date/event either fallen through or been more precisely defined?
Amgine
Amgine, are you interested in volunteering to coordinate any of this? The fact is we are looking for people to help out. If anyone is interested in volunteering please send me a private email with your contact details such as phone number, name and email. We have set up a spreadsheet of interested volunteers that we are maintaining to help with future projects. We are making progress on the business component, but there is always work to do. In particular, if someone is interested in acting as a volunteer coordinator that would be a big help. In respect to meeting up, I'm not certain if anyone is working on pulling that together, if I recall it was sort of an ad hoc discussion at the time.
In respect to communication, there was an update posted on the meta page for the project. Here is the link for those of you who don't have it:

I am certainly willing to volunteer as a member of Wikimedia Canada, but I'm very unlikely to be interested in volunteering to implement other people's decisions. I assumed the steering committee included that kind of responsibility, which is why I did not volunteer for it.
I'd already noticed the single edit to the meta page stating the papers were being circulated prior to submission. I assume solely to the aforementioned steering committee?
Amgine
Yes Amgine, the steering committee circulated the paperwork for signing to register the charity with the Canadian government. We all signed it and it has been submitted.
I'm not sure what you mean about not being interested in implementing other people's decisions. However, if you would like to help out with the rest of us, you are free to forward me your contact information with you area of interest. I will do my best to find something in that area of interest for you to do.

What 'rest of us'? There are 83 people registered and receiving these e-mails, of whom 6 or 7 appear to have known of/been involved with any decision-making. The last e-mail to this list, which is everywhere described as the way to be involved in building and implementing the chapter, was August 7th.
My apologies for plain speaking, but you fairly clearly do not represent any Wikimedia Community in Canada which has been engaged in the decisions being made ostensibly on their behalf.
You already have had my contact information, at least twice I'm aware of (sorry, my US cellphone # has changed again.) I'm sure, should you wish to contact me, you'd have no difficulties in doing so. You might even try e-mail. But for the sake of the list members and yourself, my primary e-mail address is this one, my home phone number is 778.297.7971, and my postal code is V7E 3S3.

Well, then what is your definition of "clear representation" of Wikimedians in Canada. This group as close as we could get. Not everyone who signs up on this list is going to comment on the development. Even if Alan is not offended by your comments, I think many of us who worked hard on forming Wikimedia Canada do get offended because what you suggest is unreasonable and unfeasible.

All I suggested is you do not represent Wikimedians who were informed of decisions being made on their behalf. For example, the members of this list were uninformed.
What did you think I was suggesting?
Why?
Amgine
Everyone's on this list receives the same email conversations as anyone else. If they chose not to participate in the discussion, there's nothing we could do. What makes you think some on the list are less informed than others?

The fact not a single message was sent between August 7th and November 26th regarding the ongoing process of developing and submitting an application for incorporation as an non-profit organisation? Therefore there was no discussion in which to participate? (I am, of course, not including those conversations via e-mail which were NOT on the e-mail list, which you seem to have been privy to.)
Amgine
Perhaps there are some on the list reading but not responding because they are unsure as to how to get involved?

Sue Gardner will be in Toronto in early February and can attend a Wikimedia Canada Meet-Up mid-day or the afternoon of Sunday, February 6. It is common when Sue travels that we ask local communities of Wikimedians to gather to provide Sue the ability to share information about the Foundation and to meet the individuals who are behind Wikipedia. In many cases local groups of volunteers locally organize these meet-ups. I sent emails out to this list several months ago asking if anyone would be interested to organize a meet up around Sue's visit and no one replied.
I am considering organizing the logistics for a meet-up myself, however with my current travel and work load I am unable to focus on this until mid to late December at the earliest.
Please let me know if WM Canada is willing to organize their own meet- up. I am happy to provide resources and support to whoever manages the development of the meet-up.
