Just to clarify.
I am suggesting we incorporate as Wiki Canada ( if that name is still
available ) and than operate as Wikimedia Canada. Thus we get the best of
both worlds.

WRT most discussion I find it easier if it takes place on Meta. What we
should do about IT is being discussed here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Canada/website It is easier to
follow the history of the discussion in the wiki format. We can also begin
projects before incorporation takes place.

The chapter in the UK is incorporated as Wiki UK and operates under the name
Wikimedia UK. There are a few reasons for this. One is as already
mentioned, if the two organizations were to every have problems, this one
would just lose its operating name and would not need to change its legal
name. If we use Wikimedia we need documentation from Wikimedia saying we
can us the name and this needs to be submitted to the Federal government.
One more thing to slow the process of incorporation. The main reason I
proposed this however is that in the documents regarding charities states a
charity needs to be completely independent and retain complete control over
all finances ( with a few exception of which Wikimedia is not one of them
). Being incorporated under a name without ties to another group will
decrease the chance of us having problems with applying for charity status.

Hello All
I have made a number of further edits to our bylaws. I have made the
minimum number of directors 5 and shall go with the 5 listed here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Canada/Steering_Committee unless
others wish to also add their names. I hope to finish work on the by laws
tomorrow and submit them shortly to the Chapter Committee for approval and
feedback. Please if everyone could take a further look at them and comment.
I have altered the name used in the documents from Wikimedia Canada to Wiki
Canada. The Chapter Committee does not have issues with this and it will
makes us a little more independent and thus incorporation / charity status
easier.
I have begun filling out the forms for incorporation / charity status. I am
planning on using my address here in Cranbrook, British Columbia as the
societies mailing address unless others have a preferred suggestion.
Once incorporated I think I will be able to get us an banking account
without banking fees through National Bank.

Hello All
We need five people who are willing to be the initial directors of Wiki
Canada. To be a director you will need to be willing to make public your
name, address, and occupation as per the application of incorporation, and
be of legal age in Canada.
I have created a table here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Canada/Steering_Committee#People_i…
everyone could finish their details I will work on completing the
paper
work.

Hello All
I have gone over all the by laws and compared them with the federal
examples. They look good. Have made a few small changes. I have submitted
them to the chapter committee for comments.

I shall counter-balance the west coast slant by saying I live very near Toronto, and York University would be great for me. Any of those dates would be good (they are all Tuesdays, I see).
Further, I think having some sort of definate date in mind might help push things on a bit.

Would anyone like to meet up sometime before Sue comes in February? I am going to be in and out of Toronto from August to early September, so if anyone in the GTA would like to have a meetup this summer, send me a private email and if there is interest from a few people I'll get back to the group. Alternatively, we could wait and meet in January before she gets here just so we look more prepared.

I am happy meeting by teleconference. Canada is a big country and Toronto
is a long way from were I live in British Columbia. We have a number of
question posted at the meta wiki that need input from all involved. We need
to decide if we will incorporate under "Wiki Canada" or "Wikimedia Canada"
at which point we can simultaneously send in the documents for incorporation
( which IMO should be done at the federal level ) and apply for charity
status. We should meet via teleconference in the next couple of weeks.

Hi folks,
I've been invited to come do a talk at Schulich (York University) on
one of the following dates: January 11th; February 8th; March 15th; or
March 29th. Normally I would say no, because it's not worth the long
travel to do a small talk. But I'm curious to know if you folks might
be willing to do a meet-up on one of those dates? (Or more
accurately, a day or two before one of those dates.)
I'm half-interested just because I want to meet Canadian Wikimedians,
and half-interested in hopes that a F2F meetup might help move you
folks one step closer to becoming a chapter. I'd really like to see a
Canadian chapter :-)
I'm CCing my assistant James. If it looks like there's enough
interest, we'll say yes to Schulich and I'll let this list know when
I'll be in town.
Thanks,
Sue
