hi all,
Please save the date for an edit-a-thon celebrating the public domain - and
Wikipedia's 18th birthday! - at MIT on Tuesday, January 15, 3-6pm (and
possibly later).
*information*:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Public_Domain_Day_2019
*registration:* https://libcal.mit.edu/event/4841683
*Description: *
Join the MIT Libraries during IAP for a Public Domain-themed Wikipedia
edit-a-thon! January 1st is Public Domain Day – the day when works
published in 1923 go out of copyright in the United States and enter the
public domain, making them available for anyone to reuse and remix. This is
the first time in twenty years that new published works have entered the
public domain! To celebrate, the MIT Libraries are digitizing 100 works
from 1923 selected from our collections. Because they are now out of
copyright, we can freely use images and text from these works on Wikipedia
and other open licensed projects.
Join us to explore these digitized works and learn how to contribute to
Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. What did engineering education look like
in the 1920s at MIT? (Did you know there was once a food science program
here?) Want to explore state of the art scientific instruments from 100
years ago? What about novels and poems from classic authors?
We’ll introduce the works and give you an introduction to editing Wikipedia
and ideas for topics to work on, or bring our own topics. No prior
Wikipedia experience is required. We will have support from experienced
Wikipedia editors and librarians, as well as snacks and pizza. Join us for
an afternoon devoted to exploring engineering in the Jazz Age and
contributing to the world’s largest reference work.
We will combine this with an event to celebrate Wikipedia's 18th Birthday
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Day>! Wikipedia was founded on
January 15, 2001. We'll have pizza and cake into the evening to celebrate.
Wikipedians old and new are invited to attend.
Please join us for any portion of the event, but do *register here
<https://libcal.mit.edu/event/4841683>* or list yourself below so we have
an accurate count for lunch.
*What*: Public Domain Day Edit-a-thon
*When*: January 15, 2019, 3-6pm
*Where*: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology>, 77
Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA, *14N-132* (building 14, Room 132 - the
library computer classroom).
Hope to see you!
Phoebe
Please join the MIT Libraries <http://libraries.mit.edu/>, EECS GSA
<http://eecsgsa.mit.edu/> and EECS GW6 <http://gw6.scripts.mit.edu/> on
Friday, November 2 as we celebrate women in computing and engineering!
We'll celebrate Millie Dresselhaus's birthday (Nov 11) and Ada Lovelace Day
(Oct 10) by editing and improving Wikipedia articles on the work and lives
of female engineers and computer scientists, with a particular focus on
documenting and explaining their work and technical achievements.
Learn how to edit Wikipedia over lunch and then spend the afternoon
exploring, adding to and editing the world’s largest open access project.
Everyone is welcome, including new and experienced Wikipedia editors, and
editing in any language (not just English) is welcome!
Time and date:
* Friday November 2, 12-4pm, 12-0168 (in the new Nano building).
* Please join us for any portion of the event, but do register
<https://libcal.mit.edu/event/4658987> so we have an accurate count for
lunch. (https://libcal.mit.edu/event/4658987)
Schedule:
* 12:00p-1:00p - Lunch, Wikipedia introduction and editing class
* 1:00p-3:30p - edit-a-thon -- work on articles: get one-on-one help from
experienced Wikipedia editors, librarians and writing instructors. Use MIT
Library resources to add citations and information.
* 3:30p-4:00p - edit-a-thon discussion and report-out
Learn more and propose articles to work on here:

Hi everyone,
My colleagues at Boston University and I are talking about hosting an event here at BU before Wikimania in South Africa.
One idea that we think we would be able to facilitate is something on the topic of the Global South, as mentioned here:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2018/02/05/wikimania-cape-town-ubuntu/
While our African Studies Library is interested in facilitating a translation-related event, this would be an event better attended during the school year.
Do you have any ideas for the event, or interest in perhaps attending? If so, please let us know.
We’re considering an early July date but are open to possibilities.
Best wishes,
Laura

Dear New England wiki-kin,
Update from the conference :) Please ask any questions you have about the
event.
Abhishek and I attended the Wikimedia Conference in Berlin last weekend.
There were roughly 200 attendees from 100 affiliates, and many other
attendees from the WMF and our host, Wikimedia Deutschland.
Some partnerships, collaborations, and US-specific conversations:
* There were many discussions about influencing policy that affects free
knowledge and the projects. European wikimedians have an annual meeting to
clarify policy positions, draft statements to share with politicians and
campigns, and decide how to push for key topics. US Wikimedians and the
WMF discussed net neutrality
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gamaliel/Net_Neutrality> and upcoming
legislation in the coming month. Senator Wyden is interested in meeting
with Wikimedians to inform his positions in support of NN.
--> How do we feel about supporting active NN advocacy and even lobbying?
A day of action is coming up on May 9
--> WMDC and the WMF talked about having a permanent lobbyist in DC to
support and coordinate national efforts.
* We shared ideas for better collaborations with universities and
libraries, and connections b/t open repositories & wikidata. Special props
to the many US librarians involved in that conversation. Stanford has a
large library-data initiative that is focusing on adding a
wikidatan-in-residence to integrate their projects with WD.
* We started a new user group for offline distributions
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects>.
* There is now a user group focused on the annual US wikiconference; and a
few new regional groups, all of which sent a representative.
* In the strategy discussions, a number of people (again) from within and
without the country asked about when we would have a US Chapter.
Implications: support for native languages within the US, nation-level
outreach outside of the currently active metropoles, and small projects
across the country.

We will focus on artists' books and have a talk and showing of some of the
amazing artists' books in our collection by our art librarian! Then we can
work on articles about the artists, or another topic of your choosing.
