Dear Wikipedians,
Joseph Reagle, Mako, and I are starting a reading group meeting
alternate Wednesdays this term. It will focus on changing approaches
to synthesizing and disseminating knowledge, where wikis and Wikipedia
fit into developments in recent centuries, and how these changes
reframe the way we think of ourselves as creators or as
knowledge-driven communities.
We invite your input on useful readings, from wikiprojects and essays
to papers and statistical analysis.

Other thoughts on where we could take this concept are also welcome;
the imagined audience is a mix of Wikipedia users and enthusiasts,
social theorists, and academics hoping to capture some of the
collaborative wiki-spirit in their own work. While the readings will
be a shared background and language, participants will be encouraged
to come with their own projects to discuss or troubleshoot.

Dear friends,
Please join the Boston Wikipedians, Wikimedia's new Chief Community
Officer Zack Exley, and other Boston-area community organizers this
Wednesday at 5 PM, for a discussion of community structure and
Wikipedia.
Where: Berkman Center, 23 Everett St, 2d floor.
When : 5-6 PM, Wednesday, Sep 22
SMS me if you have any trouble getting in, or if you can't make it
then but want to join us for a drink at the Cambridge Common just
after: 617 529 4266
Cheers,
Sam.
Dear Wikifiends,
Joseph Reagle and Mako and I are discussing starting a reading group
about Wikipedia and institutions of learning this term. Details
haven't been finalized yet, but I'd like to bounce ideas off of anyone
who is interested and available. It would be hosted at the Berkman
Center, and build on some of the current work there and at the Center
for Collective Intelligence @ MIT, but would also be for sharing
projects and ideas of the participants, and developing a good reading
list of outstanding papers in collaboration from many different
disciplines, from operational strategy to political science to
sociology to the history of science and creativity.
There are also some guests from out of town visiting late next week,
from the French Wikipedia and from Wikimedia, and there's a chance
that we could get them to join for a Wednesday meeting.
I know this is short notice, but if we have enough interest I'll
arrange for light food and a room at Berkman - so please rsvp to the
list if interested with when you would be free after 6pm on Wed.
Warmly,
SJ

Ben - Do you want to collab on a signpost essay Friday? I'll be doing
wiki work all day. I copy the Boston Wikipedians: don't forget about
OWC coming up soon!
What's your WP user name? I"ll leave you a comment w/ a link to the
project where you can leave a geonotice request; or just send me the
address...

A heads-up for those of you who dig the i.r.c. -- Bishakha and Phoebe
will be chatting it up on Saturday at 1200 EST in #wikimedia.
And we're looking for feedback on more regularly scheduled IRC meetings --
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_meetings#October..._and_beyond
Wishing everyone an amazing retroactive Labor Day,
Sam.
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Samuel J Klein <sj(a)wikimedia.org>
Hello,
In an annual effort to welcome new Board members with an informal
chat, the newest Wikimedia Trustees (Phoebe and Bishakha) are taking
part in an open meeting on IRC this Saturday. This is a forum to
discuss Wikimedia issues and anything else that's on your mind.
Where : #wikimedia on irc.freenode.net
When : Saturday September 11, 1600-1700 UTC
(That's 0900 PST / 1200 EST / 1800 CEST / 2130 IST)
All are welcome - please join the meeting with ideas or questions
about Wikimedia and the Projects, or simply with good cheer! If you
have a topic to add to the agenda, please add it on Meta:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_meetings#September_2010
We will keep the meeting to an hour, and will cover the agenda before
moving to an open discussion. Summary minutes will be published.
I hope to see many of you there,
Sam
