Learn to edit Wikipedia like a pro: with structured data, annotated
sources, and memorable media. Learn how to compile lists of people,
places, and projects and turn them into redlinks.
Learn to make your own work accessible to others who might write about it.

To: wikimedia_nyc(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Dear Wiki-Yorkers,
You are invited to attend Wikipedia Day 2018 on Sunday, January 14th at the
Ace Hotel in midtown Manhattan!
Part of Wikipedia's global 17th birthday celebration, Wikipedia Day will
include a mini-conference of scheduled panels as well as unconference style
talks and discussions proposed by attendees on the day of the event. And it
wouldn't be a birthday without cake, so we'll have plenty of that too.
This event is free of cost and open to all. We encourage you to invite
anyone who might be interested in discussing Wikipedia and Wikimedia
projects, but all attendees must agree to follow our friendly space
policies: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Friendly_space_policies
To register, please sign-up at http://www.acehotel.com/calend
ar/newyork/wikipedia-day-2018. See this year's schedule and sign your wiki
account name on the wiki event page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia_Day_2018.
We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our
roster, and otherwise join in the open space experience. We look forward to
seeing you soon!
Megs

Hello Wikimedians of Boston!
The New England Association for Information Science & Technology (NEASIST)
is hosting an upcoming conference at Simmons College in Boston on January
8th called *Understanding and Using APIs*. The conference is meant to
appeal to beginner or expert users of APIs and we are bringing in guests
from WBUR, EBSCO, Harvard Art Museums, and others to present and demo their
web APIs or projects built using public APIs. Most folks working with open
data would find this useful for their own projects. Please pass on this
invitation to the any other folks that might be interested.
Best,
Joshua Dull, NEASIS&T PC Co-Chair
WHAT: Understanding & Using APIs
REGISTER:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/understanding-and-using-apis-tickets-397303515…
WHO: beginners who want to know how APIs are important in digital
scholarship; anyone who wants to find an API community of practice
WHEN: Monday, January 8, 2018 (9:00 am - 4:00 pm)
WHERE: Boston (Simmons College)
HOW MUCH: $75 general, $45 ASIST members, $30 students
WHY: Finding ways to connect information is one of our biggest challenges.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are sets of requirements that
govern how one application can talk to another and share data. These
capabilities are great for researchers (part-time or professional),
librarians, students, and really anyone who works with data! Our morning
speakers are experts in APIs, and through them you'll understand what APIs
are and learn the practical uses of how APIs can enhance your data. In the
afternoon session, you'll see hands-on demonstrations and learn about API
tools you can bring back to your organization.

Hi all,
I'm forwarding this editathon announcement on behalf of Amanda Rust and the
group at Northeastern. This is a really interesting topic with lots of
specialized library sources. Members of the public are welcome, see below &
the meetup page for details. Leave a note on the talk page if you have
questions.
Happy Thanksgiving!
best,
Phoebe

Hi all,
Please see below details for an upcoming Wikipedia editing event sponsored
by Northeastern's Digital Scholarship Group and the Early Caribbean Digital
Archive. Apologies for cross-posting!
De-colonizing Wikipedia: Editing Romantic Depictions of Colonial History
and Literature
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Northeastern_OA17>
When? Friday, December 1st, 2017, 11:00am - 3:00pm
Where? Snell Library, Northeastern University, 360 Huntington Avenue,
Boston, Massachusetts 02115
<https://maps.google.com/?q=360+Huntington+Avenue,+Boston,+Massachusetts+021…>
.
Who? Open to the public as well as Northeastern University students,
faculty, and staff.
Inspired by two recuperative digital archives at Northeastern, the Early
Caribbean Digital Archive <https://ecda.northeastern.edu/> and the Women
Writers Project <http://www.wwp.northeastern.edu/>, this event seeks to
revise Wikipedia articles which extend romantic and orientalist
representations of colonial history and literature. Our goal is to
neutralize the heightened romantic and sentimental language used on
Wikipedia to represent historical figures, paying special attention to
representations of marginalized persons such as women, free and enslaved
people of color, and indigenous persons. We will focus on Wikipedia
articles on historical persons, travel narratives, natural histories,
captivity narratives, and slave narratives.
This hack-a-thon style session will focus on editing and updating Wikipedia
pages in a group setting. You do not need any prior experience with
Wikipedia to participate, just bring a laptop and a power supply. Attendees
from outside Northeastern will need a photo ID to sign into the
library—Just let the front desk staff know you are here for the
edit-a-thon. Bring your suggestions for articles that need to be improved
or authored, or help edit articles from the "Suggested Topics
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Northeastern_OA17>"
list. Pizza will be served.
Best,
Liz

Dear all,
I'm posting the below on behalf of Dr. Helen Dixon, cc'd, who is organizing
an edit-a-thon at her organization's (Society for Biblical Literature)
annual conference in Boston on Sunday Nov. 19th. They're looking for people
to help out. If you're interested, please get in touch with her directly!

I’m seeking some trainers to assist at a Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon we’re
organizing at the upcoming (in mid-November) Society for Biblical
Literature Annual Meeting in Boston. The idea is to host about 100 people,
and train them in editing Wikipedia pages, through a workshop focusing on
increasing the representation of female biblical scholars on Wikipedia (and
within a ‘happy hour’ setting!).
Some of us have hosted events like this before, and have done some editing,
but we’re all pretty basic users, and would love to have some more expert
editors either leading the training or just available as roaming helpers.
We understand that your expertise deserves compensation—please talk with us
about this if you are interested!

Hello Boston Wikipedians,
Do you have any cool projects that use the WikiMedia API
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Main_page>? Want to showcase your
project to a wide audience of information professionals?
The New England chapter <https://neasist.asist.org/> of ASIS&T is holding
an upcoming conference called "Understanding and Using APIs" at Simmons
College in Boston on January 8th, 2018. We are interested in inviting folks
from different disciplines to demonstrate how they use APIs in their work
or research. If you or someone you know has a project to share, send me an
email detailing your project and how it relies on the WikiMedia API.
Use a non-Wikipedia API in your work? That's great! We are looking for all
sorts of API projects to showcase so feel free to get in touch.
Thank you,
Joshua Dull

Hello all!
You are invited to join us at MIT this fall for two Wikipedia edit-a-thons:
*Saturday 9/30, 11a-1pm,* focusing on women in architecture, hosted by the
MIT chapter of Natl Assc of Minority Architects (NOMAS) and the MIT
Libraries.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Women_in_Architecture
*Friday 10/27, 1pm-4:30pm*, focusing on open access and using open access
materials, hosted by the MIT Libraries.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Open_Access_Week_at_M…
Snacks and editing training (from yours truly and other experienced
editors) will be provided at both events. All are welcome, new and
experienced editors alike. Add your ideas for topics to work on to the
editathon pages! And let me know if you have any questions.
best,
Phoebe
Hi Wikimedians,
I’m creating a dashboard for an ongoing event and am wondering what the best way is to organize this.
The ongoing event would be Wikipedia editing hosted by Boston University Libraries every few months or so.
Would it be easiest for me to have the Libraries as the campaign, and each event have a dashboard?
Or, just have an open-ended dashboard?
I’m researching this but if anyone has experience or examples to share, they’d be appreciated.
Thanks everyone.
Regards,
Laura

Dear Boston Wikipedians,
I’m considering creating a dashboard for our next BULibraries wikipedia event.
Are there any advantages to using this instead of adding event hashtags to posts/edits? We are still in mostly novice editing stage, though I recall the dashboard being easy to use.
Best wishes,
Laura
