Dear Asian:
We need web designers to design and run the website of Wikimedia Asia Project. Any volunteer?
Hi Morgan, is this Asian excluding Indonesia? Since I know nothing about it. If yes, please disregard my comment.

Hi Siska,
Yes, Wikimedia Asia includes all existing Asian chapters (HK, ID, IL, IN, PH, TW). I don't see the point of excluding Indonesia since Indonesia after all is in Asia. xP

1. If this mailing list end up as a LoL effort, then i'm happy to inform that I don't have time for it. 2. U mentioned something about sponsors. WMID manage to raise over USD 12 thousand for a 3 months program. If u want to know how: non profit management training. Jakarta. We do it without asian wikimedia website, and we will do it again without.
So what i can do for you sir?

Morgan, I think Siska was saying, effectively, "you have to crawl before you can walk" - whereas you seem intent on running first.
I am personally quite dubious about the "wikimedia asia" concept at this stage in the development of the Wikimedia movement and, if my summary of what Siska was saying is correct, then I have to agree with that. I do like the idea of having continent-wide collaboration project and also for sharing resources and best-practices. I also think things like Wikimania-Asia are interesting concepts for the future. However! As far as I'm aware, none of the Asian chapters (Australia included) have any staff or an office and none have any experience running fundraising campaigns/business deals within their own country - let alone at an international level! If the concept of Wikimedia-Asia is one more about trying to bring more attention of the wider wikimedia community towards Asia (to counteract a perceived bias towards Europe) then the best way to do this is to develop individually and share best practices (and money if you wish) but not to create a *new* organisation when the old one's aren't even ready to handle it.
Just my thoughts, -Liam VP Wikimedia Australia

Hi Morgan, is this Asian excluding Indonesia? Since I know nothing about it. If yes, please disregard my comment.

Morgan, I'm going to assign someone else (not me) to deal with ur or everyone else idea about wikimedia asia. He/she will report to me on case by case basis if needed. I will contact Jerry to replace my email address once I found a volunteer who is willing. On a side note, officially we are not going to give other chapter a free consent to use Wikimedia Indonesia name in whatever platform they see fit. Like I said, case by case basis. I will still be in the chapter's list.

Well Morgan, Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Anirudh pointed out that the list is private.
So is it or is it not?
This list is on open application. Some internal and external Asian members are in the list too.

I think it's "closed mailing list (i.e. only members can post), but anyone can become a member" situation.
Wikimedia Asia - especially for sharing ideas, collaborating and organising regional conferences - is a great idea, as long as it doesn't get too far ahead of itself by adopting bureaucratic trappings or taking away from the ability of the chapters in the region to run their own things. Each chapter has its own community / members to serve and needs to satisfy, and of course they need to become sustainable with a consistent membership and local activities to keep the membership interested.
Berlin was very educational for me:
* Firstly, I was amazed at the range of projects going on in different places and ideas being tried, and we can clearly all learn from each other.
* Secondly, what makes a chapter successful? Germany had a good strategic planning model which you can find a summary of on Meta under the Berlin chapters meeting. The result, ultimately, was hundreds of members, many active projects including some high-level ones (Bundesarchiv and the metadata project), and collaboration with neighbouring countries. It took some years to get there though.
* Shortly after the conference, I was speaking with Siska by email, I learned that in order to engage more people and increase interest in the chapter, activities for members and potential members have to be fun and rewarding. (This answered a big question for me coming out of Berlin.)

Thanks Andrew, that was a good summary. When we started discussing Wikimedia Asia back in 2007, the idea behind the project was to have a non-intrusive umbrella group where Asian chapters could come together and collaborate without hindering each other in any manner.
It is essential to have a website at this stage to proclaim our existence and getting the attention of potential contributors and sponsors for the project. A few static pages and a blog would go a long way towards that goal.
The Asian project was also intended to be used as a launch-pad for jurisdictions where Wikimedia does not have chapters. Since a large number of countries in Asia are still third-world, they would stand to benefit from the collective experiences and procedural familiarity of the existing chapters.
Most importantly, WMAsia can potentially play an enormous role in furthering our global commitment towards making the total sum of knowledge available to each and every individual on the planet. Continent-wide knowledge activism can be fostered in a number of ways. This can include lobbying with governments to create environments conducive for individual growth; learning from the experiences of Wikimedia chapters across the globe; assimilating with and adapting to the nature of the legal environments in Asia; studying the unique experiences of other activist organizations; and implementing projects based on ideas developed through acquired know-how and expertise.
But, for now, having a website and a blog is not a premature sentiment.

Thanks Anirudh, that was another good summary. I think that is also a main difference if you compare WMAsia to the chapters council project that proposed by Richard and Thomas.

Yes, Tzu-Chiang tend to do that, but he ended up been a graduate student in UK.
I agree we need some training on non-profit management, since not many of us have this kind of experiences.

(My computer closed on me, so yeah, I'm rewriting this e-mail).
I'm digressing here from the idea of a Wikimedia Asia conference, but allow me to take the idea a little bit further
Like everyone here, I'd agree that for the most part, we are not yet as prepared as we'd want to for such a big undertaking. Especially given that our individual chapters are only between 0-2 years old, we do need to put a lot of thought into whether or not we consent to making the project a reality. However, as far as I've interpreted what Morgan said during the chapters meeting, WMAsia is not a new organization, but is rather a platform for cooperation between the existing chapters.
I do agree though with Siska and Liam that we need to crawl before we need to walk. A mini-chapters conference among the Asian chapters would actually go a very long way towards professionalizing our chapters, with or without staff, and where we can share best practices among one another. Like the fundraising conference held in Bristol last may, we can all use lessons in how to shore up our finances. In short, we have lots of lessons which we need to learn, and these are pressing issues far more important to our individual chapters.
Maybe we need to take baby steps at this time, before moving onto bigger things.
Regards,
Josh

Tzu was right, but the discussion with Tzu and Theo at the time was not training, but more as meeting, since Taiwanese excell Indonesian in term of coordinating volunteer and coordination in general. The purpose was to swap secret recipee and some sword dead match for fundrising: kung fu vs pencak silat. Morgan, I'm gonna tell u something that u don't want to hear, but i believe a slap in the face is better in the long run than a patt in the back did for short term. Kartika emailed me re: wikimedia asia meeting in Gdansk, and I quote: 'it seem to me that they don't really know what they are doing...'

Yes, Tzu-Chiang tend to do that, but he ended up been a graduate student in UK.
I agree we need some training on non-profit management, since not many of us have this kind of experiences.

You know what, you guys, seriously if i have a bamboo long enough to hit Hong Kong and Philipines at the same time from Indonesia I will utilize it. In the mean time, until I do, rather than another unmaintain website, why don't one of u ask for a grant to come to Jakarta to receive a non profit/ not for profit management training. Taipei was planning to do this, but Tzu missed it I guess.

Hi Siska,
Yes, Wikimedia Asia includes all existing Asian chapters (HK, ID, IL, IN, PH, TW). I don't see the point of excluding Indonesia since Indonesia after
all
is in Asia. xP

Hi Morgan, is this Asian excluding Indonesia? Since I know nothing about it. If yes, please disregard my comment.
