Hello!
As Wiki Loves Earth is just two days away, the organizing team is pleased
to share two interesting stories from Wiki Loves Earth:
* “Take only photos, leave only footprints”. It is highly important to
ensure that Wiki Loves Earth participant help nature while taking
photographs, not harm it. Australian WLE team shares their experience on
how to achieve it, and we put their experience in the international
perspective.
http://wikilovesearth.org/take-only-photos-leave-only-footprints/
* “Raising awareness of nature’s fragility”. Spanish WLE winners discuss
their motivation to participate in the contest, tell the stories behind
their winning pictures — and share reflections on the benefits of Wiki
Loves Earth for nature.
Thanks to the Spanish team for preparing this interview.

Hello,
as part of the structure data the depicts
statements(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Depicts) got
released this week. They are not in the UploadWizad yet so this is not
relevant for the Upload-Campaign.
But I would like to make clear that (after the upload finished) the
protected area a photo was taken should not be shown with the depicts
statement. A protected area is a theoretical entity and can not be a
depict(of a photography). If there is an item for the real physical
object this can be added of course.
I the future there will be the "located in protected
area(P3018)"(https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P3018) statement for
this.
So I would recommend to answer with this if there are questions of
participants or maybe write this in the FAQ or other information about
your local contest.
If you think it would be good to have the protected area information in
the depicts statements for now and want to correct this after the P3018
statement got released, do this, but I think it would be better to add
this Information based on the categories then.
Feel free to say if you disagree.
Greetings
Leo (GPSLeo)
Dear all,
We are pleased to announce Wiki Loves Earth 2019 — the 6th edition of Wiki
Loves Earth international photo contest, which will take place in May and
June this year. The previous five contests have attracted more than 500,000
photos on Commons (see https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/earth), and we
hope that Wiki Loves Earth 2019 will show even better results.
And we need your help to make it happen! You can:
== Organise a local contest ==
If you are interested in organising Wiki Loves Earth 2019 photo contest in
your country — please do it! We would gladly help you with the first steps.
To declare your participation, please add your country to
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2019/Participat…
. If you don't have much experience in organizing WLE, you can learn more
on how to organize a contest in your country (it’s not that difficult!)
here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2019/Organise . You
can write to wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua and the international team will help
you.
== Join the International team ==
If you do not plan to participate in organising a local contest and want to
help other countries/affiliates/groups to organise it — please consider
joining the international team. Write a letter to wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua
describing your experience with organising projects (especially photo
contests!). And please mention what languages you speak. Note that if you
want to organise a contest locally — you should not be a part of the
international team.
The tasks are listed here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2019/Organizers
Please sign up on the talk page if you are interested in performing
specific tasks.
== Suggest a jury member ==
If you know good nature photographers (whether they are from Wikiprojects
or not!), please tell us! We will contact them and see if they can become
jury members of local or international contests.
== Spread information ==
Please share info about the contest, translate the main page of the contest
into your languages, post on social media etc. If you have an interesting
story to share, please contact us at wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua or on social
media.

Dear WLE organisers, friends and followers,
First of all, the Wiki Loves Earth international team would like to apologise for the delay with WLE international stage.
There are various reasons, from just being busy in real life to spending more time than expected on getting nominees from national organisers and setting up a truly diverse jury. Anyway, we owe you apologies for the delay and we are really sorry for that.
Now everything is sorted out, and we are glad to announce the international jury:
* Ananya Mondal, India (User:Atudu)
* Ayokanmi Oyeyemi, Nigeria (User:Kaizenify)
* Brendan Kenneth Duprey, PhD, United States/Eastern Europe
* Dietmar Bartz, Germany (User:Aalfons)
* Fayçal Rezkallah, Algeria (User:Fayçal Rezkallah)
* Fiona Ayerst, South Africa
* Renato Martins, Brazil (User:Renato Augusto Martins)
You can find their profiles on the contest website: http://wikilovesearth.org/meet-the-2018-international-jury/
Finally, the information you are definitely waiting for: the international jury is currently working on the final stage of judging and we will know the winning photos soon. We plan to announce them around 15 December (+/- few days depending on judging and opportunities for announcement).
Once again, we are sorry for the delay, and once we announce the winners we will have a discussion on how we can avoid this next year.
Best regards,
Mykola Kozlenko (NickK)

Hi all,
This is Lily from Wiki Loves Monuments international team. I'm
contacting your list as we have started receiving requests to set up
Wiki Loves Earth jury campaigns on Montage [1]. We are thrilled that
some of you find the tool useful, and we want to make sure we have a
system in place that WLE jury coordinators' requests are responded in
a timely manner.
We are looking for a volunteer who can become the Wiki Loves Earth
Organizer on our end. This role does not require technical skills, but
we do ask the volunteer to commit to fast (1-2 days) response time to
the request for setting up campaigns and responding to follow up
questions. We estimate the work to be no more than 20 hours for the
full duration of Wiki Loves Earth jury process across different
campaigns if 20 countries participate, lower otherwise.
Please let me know if you can help. :)
Best,
Lily

Dear Wikimedia colleagues,
After five wonderful editions of Wiki Loves Earth resulting in over 400,000 new photos on Commons (source: http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/earth ), we are happy to invite you to the 5th edition of Wiki Loves Earth international photo contest - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2018
As a reminder, Wiki Loves Earth is focused on natural heritage (protected natural areas of all possible types) in different countries. Like Wiki Loves Monuments, the contest is organised in a federative way – meaning that it depends only on YOU and your affiliate/group if the contest will take place in your country.
Last year we had 36 participating countries organising local contests. 20 are already on the list for this year's edition.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2018
If you have already added you country to the table, please make sure that all information there is correct: dates of the contest, time zones, landing pages, links to the lists of natural sites etc.
== To join ==
In order to join please add your country on the contest page, you can learn more on how to organise a contest in your country (it’s not that difficult!) here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2018/Organise
== Dates of the contest ==
Of course, if you have everything ready (lists of objects are the most important!) you can start contest on May 1. But if you need to work a bit more on the preparations, you can run a local contest from May 15 to June 15, from June 1 to June 30, or on any other reasonable days within May-June (particularly if your country uses a different calendar). Contact us if you have things to discuss!
== Jury tool ==
Action plan for jury tool is the same as last year : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2017/Jury_tools
== Grants ==
If you need finances to be able to buy prizes and expenses, please try to apply for a rapid grant from the Foundation: WMF disburses grants for up to 2000 USD in this programme. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible as the last (really last, there will be no other opportunity before July) day to apply for a rapid grant is May 11: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid
For example, have a look at this rapid grant application for Latvia: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/UG_LV/Wiki_Loves_Earth… and Moldova: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Gik%C3%BC/Wiki_Loves_E…

We hope to see many new participants in Wiki Loves Earth this year and we are happy to help you if you have any questions.
Please tell us what kind of assistance you would like to get from the international team! Just email us at wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua to tell what you need to start in your country
