Hello all,
To have a proper preparation for Wiki Loves Monuments in September 2013, we started already in January...
Earlier this year I spoke in the IRC channel with one of the organizers (?) and suggested that I am willing to help out with the technical infrastructure (upload wizard and CentralNotice) as I did for Wiki Loves Monuments. Nothing heard from any since...
> 1) Dates you would like Wiki Loves Earth to take place.
In the Netherlands Wiki Loves Earth is organized from 1st May until 30th June 2014.
> 3) Criteria
While we have also other nature, forests, etc, we have chosen to accept this year only pictures of the national parks of the Netherlands, without exceptions of generic species.
> On our side, the international team will be happy to help you with the following: 1) technical coordination. Most of tools that were used for Wiki Loves Monuments last year will be adapted for Wiki Loves Earth
The technical infrastructure for the contest in the Netherlands is already almost ready. As the various editions of countries have different time schedules and different focus, there is no generic upload wizard infrastructure.
As said before, I can help with the upload wizards and CentralNotice.

Dear all,
If there is sufficient interest from the community, I will propose a workshop on the WLM participants' survey and the insights we can gather from it.
I think it is important that as many people involved in the organization of WLM 2012 and WLM 2013 as possible take part in the workshop, so we can get some collective sense making going.
So please sign up on the proposal page if you are interested:
https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/What_can_we_learn_from…
It would certainly also be possible to present the results from the organizers' survey during the same workshop (possibly asking for a bit more time). Please let me know if that would be an option.
Concerning the participants' survey in 2014, we discussed with John Andersson about having one survey for all photo contests during this year.
Please let me know what you think. - Whether a participants' survey will be carried out this year at all, will probably also depend on the interest among WLM organizers. It's a lot of work; so I would suggest doing it only if there is a concrete demand for it. Any feedback is appreciated.
Kind regards,
Beat

Cheers all,
I'm Thomas Springer aka User:Ordercrazy from Kaufbeuren, Germany and i've
recentlly initiated Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in Germany.
44 years, currently living on some kind of sabbatical after what you might
call a burnout within the it-security-industry, therefore with a nice bunch
of time to do a bit more volunteering for wikipedia without getting into
the usual time-conflicts with life, kids and job.
WLE Germany is likely to be held from 5/1/2014 to 6/30/2014, for we started
the organization really late.
Currently Lists for major protection-areas are quite well done, but
category IV/V-Areas in Germany are currently only half complete and poorly
documented.
As wikipedian since 2003 I'm quite familiar with advanced scraping of
government-sites for generating and maintaining wp-lists of cultural
heritage monouments in bavaria, and whilst i'm quite sure that we won't
finish all german lists of protected areas by june 2014 i'm quite sure that
we'll be able to harmonize the format of the currently quite diverse german
lists and that WLE will help us getting a huge step closer to complete
lists (like WLM did back in 2011,12 and 13 for the cultural heritage
monuments lists).
WLE 2014 Germany is currently funded by WMDE (thanks!), we're trying to
catch sponsorships or support for coordination-events and prices. At the
moment we're busy with creating List-Templates, making WLE 2014 public
within the german community and doing PR within printmedia, for we're
already missed some deadlines for quarterly or bimonthly magazines.
Wiki Loves Earth Germany is currently coordinated here:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Loves_Earth/Deutschland
We'd be happy to participate in any international cooperation - but
currently it looks to me like WLE 2014 will be quite decentralized at all.
Greetings from, err, actually Nuremberg - i'm sitting in a train to get up
to a german GLAM-Meetup in Bremen,
Tom
Dear all,
Is there any progress?
Did we consider integrating WLE with WLM? (I am not sure is September is
the best time, just asking).
In any case, we need to start planning and local promotion at least 2
months the contest starts. So I am afraid we are already running behind
for the period May 1-June 1.
What do you think?
Best,
Vacio

Hi all,
With this letter we are happy to announce that Wikimedia Ukraine is officially starting international coordination of Wiki Loves Earth!
We encourage you, if it is not done yet, to add your country to the list on https://commons.wikimedia. org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_ Earth_2014#Participating_ countries
We would like you to draw your attention to the following issues: 1) Dates you would like Wiki Loves Earth to take place. As far as we can see, the best timing for most countries will be either 15 April - 15 May or 1 - 31 May, but we are happy to discuss your suggestion - please comment on https://commons.wikimedia. org/wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_ Loves_Earth_2014#Dates 2) Funding. If you are willing to organise Wiki Loves Earth in your country, please by aware that Wikimedia Ukraine will not be able to provide national prizes for your countries (except souvenirs). You may want to look for local sponsors or apply for a grant - in this case, we will be able to support your request, but still you have to write it yourself :) 3) Criteria. We want to be clear what kind of photos we want to get. Obviously, this will include wide views of natural sites, but we have to decide whether we want to include or not representative biotopes [species most specific to the natural site]. Please comment on this at https://commons.wikimedia.org/ wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_ Earth_2014#Scope 4) Prizes. We want to know what prizes you expect to get in the international part. We expect to have the same budget as for Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 - around 5000 US$. Last year there was one Wikimania scolarship (we want to have one this year as well, BUT we have to come with the result by late June to make it possible) and photography-related vouchers (should be something available in most, if not all, participating countries). If you have any ideas, please leave your feedback on https://commons.wikimedia.org/ wiki/Commons_talk:Wiki_Loves_ Earth_2014#Prizes
On our side, the international team will be happy to help you with the following: 1) technical coordination. Most of tools that were used for Wiki Loves Monuments last year will be adapted for Wiki Loves Earth 2) support with list conversion. If you have lists of natural monuments in any machine-readable format, we should be able to help you converting them into a wiki format. If you have no idea where to find lists of natural monuments, please contact us, but we do not guarantee we will be able to do it. 3) supporting your grant requests - it's up to you to write them, but we can provide help with them 4) providing souvenirs - e.g. calendars, postcards with best photos after the contest
Please do not hesitate to write to this mailing list if you need any help or advice.
Best regards, Mykola Kozlenko (aka NickK) for WLE international team
