I don't fully understand Citizendium's model.
If the articles are "peer-reviewed" how can they be written by "Citizens" ? I'm assuming that it's not a tautology that a "Citizen" in Citizendium doesn't simply mean a member already present. The name would have no meaning then.
I have to assume that when they named it "Citizendium" they were trying to imply that it was a sort-of anyone can join, anyone can write. Thus... Citizens of the world.
But if the articles are "peer-reviewed" how do you get normal citizens to join?
As far as a wiki distinguishing itself from Wikipedia, there is probably a niche in "child-safe", there is probably a niche in "specialized" as well. An expert on botany may feel more comfortable writing for Botanedia, and hob nobbing with her fellow experts there and probably getting credit for their writing as well.
Parents may not feel comfortable with their 9 year old daughter researching "The Little Mermaid" on Wikipedia where we state that Hans Christian Anderson had a number of probable sexual issues.

I suspect there's little market demand for a "child safe" fork of Wikipedia, or we'd have seen one. So far those pushing for such filtering try to enact it on Wikipedia itself, presumably because it's unsustainable elsewhere.
(That said, the Schools Wikipedia has endeavoured to keep itself nice and filtered for classroom use, and teachers *love* it. Really love it. As in, write in for lots of DVD copies and are encouraged to run off DVD copies themselves. It's about the most successful repackaging of Wikipedia so far.)

------------------------------------ Never having heard of this, I googled it.

Why does Google add that funny bit at the front of this long URL, and that really odd bit at the end? What does it all mean Virginia? Anyone?

What exactly did you google and where was that URL? It's a google URL pointing to the schools wikipedia URL, probably so they can monitor who clicks on external links, or something. The last bit is probably a session ID, it's like using cookies but puts the info on the end of the URL instead of in a separate file.
All I did was enter that in my Google box that's in my Browser address bar. I don't know if you'd get a different result if you actually *went* to www.google.com and used the search box in the middle of that page or not.
I forget what that thing is called that appears as a search box right in my address bar, but it claims it's google !
