I don't know if this has been brought up yet, but I noticed a little while ago that "the Free Encyclopedia" is now missing from the page titles (in FireFox, at least). Any explanation? I don't really care if it's there or not; I was just curious as to the reasoning behind the change. Thanks in advance,
Ryan
I can still see it. Maybe you changed skins?

You're right, the page title (as in <title>) no longer has "the Free Encyclopedia" in it...

As far as I can tell, it never had it. However I've just put it in.

No, it definitely had it all along. For example, see the cached Google results at the following URL:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2005-17,GGLD:en...
(that URL might be cut by line breaks)
I tried to have a look on the MediaWiki pages for the correct system message containing this option but couldn't find it.

It's [[MediaWiki:Pagetitle]].

I see you've found it now :-).
Anyway, for the benefit of others, this is the system message page concerned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Pagetitle
but as you can see from the history, it never had "the free encyclopedia" in it. Very odd.

Might http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Tagline be what you're looking for? Though I don't see a removal there either. Maybe the page was changed from using tagline to using pagetitle?

I note we seem to be back to "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"...
I liked it better when it was just "Wikipedia". Oh well, atleast it isn't "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, that anyone can edit, and that everyone tries to add crap that nobody cares about to". I'm pretty sure i have seen page titles LONGER then that...

I changed it back to "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". If we're going to change the page title away from what it's been for as long as I can remember, we should ask the community. Don't take this as an opposition to the change; I couldn't care less, really.

I agree with not changing it without consensus, though I can honestly say i never even noticed it.

I have restored the page title to its previous state. Dan was correct in that the page title mediawiki page appears to never have been edited. The only explanation for this change in the last couple of days is that someone changed the site name value, or something like that.

After you left #wikimedia-tech I was told that {{SITENAME}} has never been changed from being just "Wikipedia"...
