CARLOS SLIM HELÚ
Carlos Slim Helú astonishes people because of his administrative and visionary capacity, which translates, into his extraordinary talent to develop companies, generate jobs and contribute to Mexico's economic promotion. Carlos Slim Helú is a master in business, has a mathematical mind, is world renown not only because of his extensive and successful entrepreneurial career, but also because of his profound social vocation.
Carlos Slim Helú was born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City, is an engineer by profession, graduated from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) (National Autonomous University of México) in 1961, where before graduating he taught Algebra and Linear Programming. He has given lectures in public and private institutions, and also in international bodies such as the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA).
He has been vice-president of the Mexican Stock Exchange and President of the Mexican Association of Brokerage Houses. He was the first President of the Latin-American Committee of the New York Stock Exchange Administration Council, and was in office from 1996 through 1998. He is a director at the Board of Directors of Philip Morris Companies and Alcatel, as well as for SBC Communications, Inc., position from which he retired in July 2004 to devote more time to the Latin American Development Fund, focusing on infrastructure, health and education, amongst the most relevant work.
Financial analysts agree in rating Carlos Slim Helú as a man that is distinguished for defining and knowing the fundamental issues of each company; its problems and its potential
In 1965, he started to set the basis for Grupo Carso when he was only 25 years old. He incorporated Inmobiliaria Carso in January 1966, only three months before marrying Soumaya Domit Gemayel. The Carso name is the combination of the first three letters in Carlos and the two first letters in Soumaya. A year earlier, in 1965, ha had founded Inversora Bursátil, and headed the Board of Administration from that year onward.
Carlos Slim Helú started to dazzle people for his administrative capacity and his ingeniousness in business, and above all because he participated in many different sectors. Little by little, he built one of the most important financial-industrial empires in Mexico: Grupo Carso.
His management style is very practical. For example there is no corporate "staff" at Grupo Carso. Each company has its own structure because the idea is that their organization becomes more efficient, and only meets with the directors or executives to discuss the most transcendental issues.
Carlos Slim Helú has received very important acknowledgements: He has been awarded the Entrepreneurial Merit Medal of Honor from Mexico's Chamber of Commerce; he received the "Golden Plate Award", granted by the American Academy of Achievement and the Government of Belgium awarded him the Leopold II Commander Medal.
Currently, several companies form Grupo Carso, and all of them represent a "gigantic holding" that is divided in five major standalone companies:
· Carso Global Telecom owns the majority of the TELMEX's control stock, which operates in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Perú, asides from México,.
· América Telecom has the majority of America Móvil control stock, and is the leading supplier of wireless services in Latin America, with operations in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Nicaragua and México. In the latter it works under the Telcel brand.
· Grupo Carso controls Carso Industrial (Condumex, Porcelanite, Nacobre and Cigatam, amongst other) and Carso Comercial (Sears, Sanborns, Promotora Musical and El Globo).
· Grupo Financiero Inbursa, is formed by Banco Inbursa, Seguros Inbursa, Casa de Bolsa Inversora Bursátil, Arrendadora Inbursa, Fianzas La Guardiana and Afore Inbursa, amongst other companies.
· US Commercial Corp., holding company of CompUSA.
It has taken Carlos Slim Helú 38 years of his live to create Grupo Carso, of which he is now the Honorary Lifetime Chairman. He also holds this position in TELMEX, América Móvil and Grupo Financiero Inbursa. At 64 years old he is still on top of his companies, although his three sons Carlos, Marco Antonio and Patrick Slim Domit head them.
Carlos Slim Helú has also become a symbol of altruist and humanistic labor, and is outstanding because of his permanent support to social charity work through the TELMEX Foundation, incorporated in December, 1995, that reinforced and expanded the programs and activities that had been carried out by Asociación Carso A.C., incorporated in 1984. Due to its achievements and the amount of population benefited, TELMEX Foundation is the largest organization of its kind in Latin America.
In the year 2000, Carlos Slim Helú organized the Fundación del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México A.C. (Mexico City Historic Downtown Foundation), which objective is to revitalize and rescue Mexico´s City historic downtown, for more people to live, work and find entertainment in this area. He is Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Restoration of the Historic Center since the year 2001.
Additionally, as part of his philathropic work, he heads the Latin America Development Fund project.
People who know him, know that for Carlos Slim Helú "Success does not lie in doing things well or very well and be acknowledge by others. It is not an external opinion; it is an internal state; it is the harmony of soul and his emotions that need love, family, friendship, authenticity, and integrity. Work well done is not only a responsibility he has with himself and with society, it is also an emotional need".
Besides being a nationalist and visionary businessman, Carlos Slim Helú is a lover of history, culture, and an Art Connoisseur and collector, a baseball fan, but above all, he is a simple and human man, for whom family is the irreplaceable essence of love, teaching of values and success.

I've incorporated most of it. Some of it was statements of opinion, so I didn't add this. I also think the info on Grupo Carso should most likely be added into a new [[Grupo Carso]] article.
