That's an interesting image, as it happens ([[Image:Pynchon.jpg]]) - the description refers to an "Army passport", but that looks rather like a sailor's uniform to me...

Likely it is, as Pynchon served two years in the U.S. Navy and none in the Army. Confusion may owe to the fact that this photo (like so many other free images of American topics) was first uploaded on the German Wikipedia, where the word "Armee"[1] (which can conceivably refer to any military force) was probably used.
