I've long wished there were a genealogical database of European monarchs etc, where for instance Charlemagne exists as an entry with his wives listed in one column, his sons in another, his daughters in another, his known mistresses in another and his mother and father in two more.
as it grew (wikistyle) you could then see things like: all male descendants of Charlemagne (or whoever) or choose to display the information in all sorts of ways.
but I don't know a) how to do it or b) if wikipedia is the right place for it
any thoughts?

Frederick was very active in the cause of ensuring that he had descendants. It is quite easy to show parents and grandparents in ascendence. The spouses and children are also easily placed, but descending even one more generation gets complicated.

There's a lot of interesting material on this site but, it takes a while to understand how to navigate it. The "8" link at the top of an individual page will shoe three levels of ascendancy.

Hi Sean. See also [[m:Wikifamily]] and its siblings for a more general concept for a genealogy project. For the devs: would it be possible to try setting up another db for testing this project idea out? There seem to be a number of interested parties. It could start out as a normal wiki -- with sean's layout ideas implemented as crude templates -- and as a place to gather gen. information and discuss how that project could develop in more detail.
