Sheldon and Geoff suggest:
But anons and new users do have a tendency to save without first previewing. I would therefore support the removal of the Save button
from the initial edit screens presented to anons. Only after they previewed once would they be presented with the save button.
That is such a simple & brilliant solution that I wonder why no one else has thought of it until now. Such a change would not be a serious barrier to someone who wanted to make the contribution without logging in: the forum on Linux Weekly News requires a preview step for its members to submit input, & I'd say that place has a high signal-to-noise ratio. It would also encourage the creation of more accounts, which would draw more people in.
Developers, please hide the "Save" button for newbies (like IP users and those recently signed-in) -- thus requiring them to PREVIEW each page submitted. (Un-hide the button, of course on the preview page :-)
We can try the experiment for a couple of weeks, and see if it has good effects. What do you say?

I'm not sure about that one. The purpose of the preview button is to preview, not a step toward saving.
I don't think bots will like it.
I don't think trolls will be put off by it. For example, slashdot has that 15 (or is it 20) seconds posting rule, yet it is a real cave.
Not all anon login people are new or inexperienced users.
Trolls live in caves, remember, and hate sunlight. Don't give them any place to hide and shine the light everywhere.

I confess that I often save without preview.

Bots only remain newbies for a very short time. In less than a minute they can acquire enough edit history to graduate them from newbydom. :-)

It depends what derivation of troll your using. In their most common usages the noun and verb have completely different etymologies. When we refer to the verb their work is done on the open ocean.
The two etymologies do have another point of convergence The Nordic troll through the Germanic gave rise to the word "trull"; the Old English sense of turning, revolving or even the musical singing of successive parts of a drinking song eventually gave rise to the word "trollop".
This is trolling at its most feminized. ;-)
