Please keep in mind that if a link is used as a reference for an article, especially if it is cited in the article text, it should never be removed, even if dead, until a suitable replacement reference is provided.
Can't we replace such links with links to web.archive.org then?

Adding a link to web.archive.org is appropriate and desirable but replacement destroys the link to the original source, which will be needed if/when web.archive.org dies.

Doesn't a web.archive.org link contain within it the URL of the original source?

It does.

However, that may not be transparent to an inexperienced user who finds that the link is dead, which is the reason for not replacing the original. Of course, even as I type this, I realise that the user who cannot recognise the URL within the link is probably too unsophisticated to find an alternative archive.

I don't know if web.archive.org is amenable to this sort of thing, but what if one could do the following:
* [http://deadlink.com Wonderful website] (link dead as of August 2005, available at {{web.archive.org|http://deadlink.com%7D%7D)
Which would be an auto-linking template? Hopefully the user could figure all that out.

If the site is dead, and there is no archive of it on the internet archive (or anywhere else presumably), why would you want the link anyway?

You might want it in case the site comes back up (as has been known to happen).

I think it is fair to say that the internet archive will outlast 99.9% of the rest of the internet, making this discussion academic :P However, you're point is taken.

Has the Wayback Machine archived anything new since the end of 2004?

They archive loads; the archives are only available some 6 months or so after archival, though, so as not to be a direct "competitor" for the same content, or something. Thus it won't appear to have "archived" anything since about February.
