I agree. People need to be able to discuss matters openly and frankly. It really is nobody else's business but the people on the mailing list what is said on that list. Other email conversations aren't accessible generally. Why should this mailing list be available? Many people don't realise that what they say on the mailing list isn't private and if they did might simply opt out of it.

I disagree. Having a track record is important. People in 5 years will need the records to see what we did and why we did it. It might cut down the flame-wars.

What about archiving the mailing list locally, but not having that available to crawlers so that it's hidden from Google and Yahoo! and such? That way there would be a record, but people would have to come to the Wikipedia to see it.

It might.
More to the point, since the list is entirely open--to the point that people banned from the Wikipedia can still read and contribute to the mailing list--making it unsearchable wouldn't provide privacy, only inconvenience.

Well, I don't agree at all. Wikipedia is a transparent public project, what we do is all out in the open for anyone to see.
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.
It is true that of course some things are best said privately -- but then they are best said really privately, one on one, to trusted confidants.

Well...in case they did not know, now they do. Nothing said here is private. Nothing said on talk page is private either :-)

I agree. If people want to lead private lives, then the mailing list is not for them. It does not preclude them in participating to the W as an anon user, however.
To use the legal term, there is no expectation of privacy in email.

you don't even have to be an anon user; just use a pseudonym.
