How many redirects does enWP have? My question is not entirely idle.

I think one would need a database dump or toolserver access to determine that. I would suggest that the devs add more details (such as this) to the Special:Statistics page but I'm afraid that would make *some people* panic and wantonly delete redirects for no meaningful reason.
As for the actual number, I'm willing to make an unscientific guess of half a million, maybe more. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

In the August 2 database dump, I believe there are around 2,052,140 of them. That's "articles" that match /#REDIRECT\s*[[(.*)]]/i in the main namespace.
The exact number for enwiki-20070908.xml dump is 2.216.516 redirects.
My counter does not regard whether the target pages for the redirects actually exist.

In the main namespace of the enwiki-20070908.xml dump there was exactly 1.612.641 redirects.
Total number of redirects in all namespaces was 2.216.516
Only the last revisions was counted, since only the last revision represents the actual status.
The validity of the target pages for the redirects were not checked.

Yeah, I'd definitely say making those numbers prominently visible would only lead to deletionism and drama.

Publishing the number of articles certainly had that effect.

In the enwiki-20070908.xml dump there's exactly 2.216.516 redirects. The number is based on the *last* revision as of the aforementioned September enwiki dump.
Only syntactically valid #redirects are counted (that is, balanced pairs of [[...]] ). So far my counter does not regard whether the *target* page for the redirect actually exist.
The number was counted using my own tool, work name "RILMediawikiProcessor" **
