I think just about any prominent admin could have unblocked Brandt by giving the reasons I have given, and they probably would have gotten some heat about it. The real test is: how to respond to that heat? As for me, I am happy to take the heat, and intend to simply answer questions as best I can.
This is why I wonder how in tune you are with the community these days. This isn't a knock against you, but a legitimate criticism, I think - any other person with administrative powers right now would, bare minimum, be in the midst of an RfC right now, if not dragged in front of the ArbCom based on the community discussion that you apparently feel didn't come to a consensus. Whether ArbCom would take the case (or whether you'd instruct ArbCom not to), no one knows, but there's no way any other person would get just "some heat."

We don't have to settle for this kind of seat-of-pants stuff. The nearest thing to Jimbo's recent actions that I can think of is Linuxbeak's initiative in unblocking Blu Aardvark and Mistress Selina Kyle under mentorship in May, 2006.
There was an RFC, but what of it? A Request for comment is a reasonable forum for resolving disagreements. The RFC is here:

"Linuxbeak said himself that his failure to consult the community was an oversight. This implies that, retrospectively, he feels he was in error by unblocking the users without discussion. They were quickly reblocked, and Linuxbeak has made no attempt to reunblock them. It was a small error on his part, easily remedied and nothing to hold against him....In summary, Linuxbeak has acted admirably at every step of this dispute, despite being blamed for things he had nothing to do with, and despite constant general attacks on him. He did not in any way act wrongly, and my respect for him has if anything increased by reason of his behavior during this incident."

"...The current outcome is not optimal, but Linuxbeak himself played a positive role. Linuxbeak is to be commended for his initiative and demonstrated diplomatic skill. In future it might be important to coordinate diplomatic efforts better within the community, so that people like Linuxbeak will be more effective...."
Overall I think this was something that enhanced Linubeak's reputation, and reflected great credit on the community that supported him.

Hmm ... I think a lot of people have exactly the opposite view.

Linuxbeak did something which was consistent with WP values and policies, and in good faith and assuming good faith, but very unpopular.
So did Jimmy.
Amen to this. We should never be afraid to stick our necks out if we feel a benefit. The community may have over ridden Linuxbeak, as was their right, but no one finds real fault with what he did, at least not that time has passed, just that he may have been overly sympathetic.

Yep. This is the way it works.
It did seem to me that the community was by and large fairly supportive of the unblock and attempts to reach a compromise. It was just a small handful very vocal users, yourself included, that raised strong objections. Now, as a result of that, it went before the ArbCom kangaroo court, and I was rebanned. (True. I justified that ban by my later actions, but let's not forget the massive assumptions of bad faith that went around on both sides prior to this)
Why must we relive this anyway?
