Following up on my earlier question regarding this lists archives and google - is it really necessary to have the archives publicly available rather than open only to subscribers to the list? And if it is necessary to make them publicly available do they really have to be accessible to google?

Yes and yes. It's an open list for an open source project, and that's how people look stuff up and research and learn what's been done before and so on. It seems to me to be basically ridiculous to suggest it should be otherwise. Of what possible benefit to the project would it be to keep it closed? Whose secrets are we protecting? Every edit on the wiki is attributed and researchable, why not the list?
