I made a plot[1] of account creations on the English Wikipedia based on Newuserlog data, there has been quite a spike since anonymous page creation got disabled, although the numbers are a bit inaccurate since it has also been in the press lately.

Indeed. We've over doubled our account create rate, to the point that actually looking at those accounts is problematic.
