Could someone please write up a brief NPOV summary of recent events? I haven't kept up with wikien chatter in a few months, and I've been reluctant to poke back in - all these apparent "rape" allegations scared me off. I could'nt find the source threads quickly enough and decided it would better to ask for a polite condensation from people who know whats going on and can summarise it well.
Thanks, -stevertigo

Trying to continually summarize the meandering discussions going on on the mailing-list is a fools errand. Do what I do: If you missed the beginning of a discussion and don't feel up to reading 400 messages on the topic, just ignore it and hop onto the next one. If it's something *really* important you'll probably hear about it anyways.

Yeah, agreed on that. Might as well let it be water under the bridge (if anything at all).

Lots of rubbish, some glimmerings of substance. I suggest going to the archive page:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2007-August/author.html
- and reading by author, not thread. That should cut the crap down to maybe 75%.

I see it more as a melting pot: we burn through discussions with a passionate fervour, in order to extract the core of an issue, those glimmering pieces of insight that actually could help the encyclopedia.
Oh, and occasionally some poor bystander falls in and dies, screaming in pain.

I sure wouldn't want to be trying to follow it using traditional means! Gmail is quite handy too for both skipping threads and posts. Also one doesn't have to worry about the high traffic or deleting emails! If I really had to find something from sometimes back or across all posts, I can just use gmail search, which is also handy!
I think wiki-en can be useful for getting an idea of Wikipedia goings-on without reading a bazillion different "Wikipedia:X" type pages daily. Most big things crop up here - even if they don't deserve to be a big issue. It's enlightening in itself though to see lots of discussion about a non-issue that lots of people get fired up about.

That's curious. Why do you suggest reading by author - rather than by the subject being discussed?

Because in my personal opinion the quality of posts varies per author, not per thread.
Mind you, in practice I still read everything ...

I would call that impressive, but really, it's just mental :)

There are limits! A loooong post from some sender that I don't recognize, and that begins with "Some bastard just blocked me ..." is likely to draw as much of my reading time as the post that I am now answering. :-)

Because polluted, unorganized threads are completely useless! :-) I agree with David that its easier just to go through and ignore the usual suspects, but I haven't been around for a while, and I don't recognize some of the newer ones.
Still it would be nice if we could rename garbage thread titles...
Hence I see the future... its... online OTRS style flagging.. a cross between mail and wiki... a rating system for posts, etc...

Ignore members of your own Community who are suspected of what?

Well, you do get to know the style of the members and their personality after a while, so it's not like totally unreasonable to just skip ahead to the posters you like (since the traffic is so high). I know that if I see the name "Jimmy" in the sender field in gmail, it's probably worth reading, and if I see a thread started by David it's probably a link to an SEO related blog post :) (I love those threads btw, keep em coming!)
