than "I've never heard of it so it must not be
notable".

But "not notable" and "not encyclopedic" is not the
same thing as "I never heard of it". There are lots
of things on VfD right now which are listed because
they're not notable, or at least the nominator
believes so, which has nothing to do with whether
they're obscure or not. Things like [[Countries on
two continents]], [[Russian joke]], [[F11]], [[Cities
with same latitude]], [[Axis of weasel]],
[[Hypocoristics for Spanish names]], [[Esuvee]],
[[Vampire lifestyle]], etc., etc., etc.
