Has everyone seen this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Service_awards
Kept by MfD apparently, which was a surprise, and [[WP:OWN]]ed by Herostratus if my talk page is anything to go by.

No, that was one borderline remark, and the concept of the awards is good... ~~~~

I only found two transclusions, which is odd given the passion it apparently arouses, and I fail to see what is good about editcountitis.

Well, it can be seen as editcountitis, it could also be a quick glance idea of their time and expertise on the project.

Isn't that exactly what editcountitis leads to, the conclusion that number of edits equals expertise? The editor whose idiotic GAs I have to keep dumping is quited interested in his edit count--but that should not be mistaken for expertise, as all of their botanical edits are problematic. And probably his other ones are just as bad.
But he has lots of edits.

Actually, the transclusions don't tell the whole story (and I'm surprised you wouldn't see this.) The Image pages tell a different story, with several backlinks on this image alone.

I didn't tell the whole story because I didn't look that hard. All I saw was a page promoting editcountitis apparently a fork of the barnstar page, a POV-pushing troll "awarding" himself things, and a bunch of copyright violations (derivative works based on copyright).
Superficial of me, I know.

I don't care if the barnstar page gets forked. The more award incentives the better. It makes people happy and willing to contribute. Copyvios are a problem, but you'd have to be a bit more specific. What works were based off copyrighted material?

The book covers.

Are you sure. They look about PD age or older. What books are they based off anyway?

As was pointed out to me when one I created for the specific purpose of parody, but used solely in project space, was deleted, it's up to the originator to prove lack of copyright. I don't think PRC has such a concept in respect of the Little Red Book, but I could easily be wrong.

Barnstars are good, because they foster a sense of community, and encourage recognition of the value of each other's work.
I find it particularly distasteful that these service "awards" are intended to be awarded to one's self - they certainly do not help to build the community.

Realistically, this service award page appears to be too minor to worry about, yet (barely) too popular to delete out of hand. Editors who enjoy acknowledgments can add this award to their collections. I see this as the most harmless and funny version of the various "rank" proposals that we've seen before so many times. It's too silly to be prestigious, it confers no benefits, and it's been low-key until now. If we get rid of it there'll be a vacuum and someone will suggest StarFleet-style rankings again, or complicated schemes with special benefits at each stage, or who knows what. And then we'll have to talk about that and so on. Better to have something innocuous to fill the niche.
Regarding concerns about "editcountitis", the actual requirements of this award favor longevity over volume. For example, I'd currently qualify as a Veteran Editor II (or Grand Tutnum), a mid-level award. I'm already well over the edit count required to get the highest award but I'll have to keep editing for another 25 months and go up the four levels to achieve Master Editor (or Complete and Perfect Tutnum of the Encyclopedia). Will I be a "master editor" after 4 years and 40,000 edits? It'd be nice to think so. "Senior lunatic" might be a more appropriate award though. (Or fill in your own joke) .
Based on objective criteria, this award is a form of thanks from the community, just as barnstars are acknowledgments of one individual by another based on subjective criteria. We should all find ways of thanking each other and, yes, even ourselves for our volunteer efforts.
Cheers, Will Beback

Oo! I qualify as a Complete and Perfect Tutnum of the Encyclopedia! I've got a Mason friend with various high-falutin' titles as a result of his degrees, this will finally give me a basis for competition.
Can't think of any other use for it offhand, though. Not sure if it would go over well on a resume. :)
