I've noticed that in Google results, Wikipedia articles sometimes get summaries that aren't the page content but are descriptions of it. For instance, when I search Google for "Australia", the Wikipedia article (which is at #2 in the results) has this:
"Hyperlinked encyclopedia article covers the country's history, government and politics, geography, economy, demographics, language and culture."
Has Google put these summaries into place itself, or is it something we've done on our end?

Googling for "Hyperlinked encyclopedia article covers the country's history" results in about 16,000 hits, second of which is the Open Directory at dmoz.org. I think that that is the source of the phrase.

If a specific page is mentioned in dmoz.org, google does include the description (as long as there are no snippets to be shown) unless there is a specific flag set in the meta information of that page.
