We should only need to consider the acceptability of such links when they arise in a context as part of the normal course of editing. Anything else is artificial.

Good thinking. That is part of what is wrong with the formulation, "Is Slate an Attack Site?" Of course, it's not. So much not, that formulation of the question in those terms can be interpreted as trolling.

Yes, you could interpret it that way -- if you wanted to assume bad faith.
Or you could actually buckle down, follow one of Wikipedia's core values and say, "Well, if he's not trolling, what legitimate point could he be making? Even if I don't agree for a minute, can I understand it and respect the person involved?"
Given your summary of the opposing view, I am forced to suspect you haven't done that yet.
