I've received the following spam, masking as though it's from the mailing list. Directly replying would be to the roomity address, and not to this mailing list. Ec

Ray,
I was reading your posts on the Wikien-l mailing group yesterday, and think our site may be of interest to you. It will put all the posts from the group on one page, and keep your inbox cleaner.
There is nothing to buy, and there is a video demo, if you like. If you do get a chance to check it out, let me know what you think of it
- I would love to hear your thoughts.
The site addy is http://www.roomity.com.
Thanks!

Hmm that's a worry. It's certainly an argument for keeping the mailing list archives private. Maybe we need to see if there's a way to mask email addresses on the archive from spam robots like this.

Who would you keep the archives private from? If you're thinking only non-subscribers need to be kept out of them, then that wouldn't help since roomity.com have been attempting to subscribe to the lists, including ones which are not publicly archived like the mediation one. If they're subscribing to the lists, they don't even need the archives since they get the posts directly from the people they then try to spam.
Angela.

Yes, good point. I didn't think of that :)

Can someone (eg. Brion) block ban this address maillist@roomity.com from all of the lists? Or does it have to be done individually? I also got a direct mail from that address (with slightly different text to what Ray got) as a result of some posts to the wiki-research-l list, and i see they are subscribed to the foundation-news-l list, which I monitor (but can't ban anyone, unless they spam the list). (Nudging Sj who can do this at least.)

This looks like a reputable business - can't they be warned off with reference to anti-spam laws?

Has somebody tried to just e-mail them and ask them please not to spam us or our list members?
Tell them we're not interested in their products and if they keep it up we'll create a whole article about how they are a relentless spamming company who doesn't respond to polite requests? ;-)

I replied as an individual at the time asking them not to send me any more mail. Sj has just CCed the tech contact at roomity.com his reply to my request (which didn't get to the list - the reply, not the request) so credit goes there.

Roomity were subscribed to WikiEN-l and not moderated (which indicates they subscribed more than a couple of months ago). I have moderated that address, stopped them from receiving mails from the list and banned the address (so if they unsubscribe and attempt to re-subscribe they will be unsuccessful).
