Ah, but the problem is that, as a grassroots effort, we have no control over the impulses of our participants. Our more... fanatic... devotees are likely to respond to this latest slight with mouths a-foaming and fingers a-misspelling.
I plan to counter El Reg's criticisms by improving articles. AFAIC it's the only appropriate response.

We just need to tell him that if he thinks Wikipedia is crappy now, he should go to the Internet archive and see how crappy we were three years ago, or even a year ago. I think he them *might* get the idea that we have improved a great deal and are getting better all the time.
The fact that Wikipedia is just 3 and a half years old and Britannica is over 200 should also help him gain perspective.

Mav, let him wallow in his ignorance. His readers will realize he's full of bitterness once they check out the site and possibly become a contributor.

Well, it says little for the register to mouth off about Wikipedia users as "wiki-fiddlers" based on a very small but vocal minority who send them long and abusive emails. I tend to ignore the criticisms of Wikipedia from "The Register" in much the same way I ignore criticisms I can't fix on Featured Article Candidates because they're not actionable. Though adding references and improving the quality of articles in general is a good approach to responding to general criticism, however this is not my response to the Register: this is something I want to do anyway.
