I would probably answer and try to cool him off :-)
He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about. Maybe he has misread one or two lawbooks, or watched too many court shows on TV. I would be
inclined to simply tell him to "put up or shut up".

It has been my experience that when part of me is saying that something is stupid, it's right far more often than not.
Which doesn't mean the rest of me actually listens to it....
