Hello All, I came across in some posts with the idea that giving Zoe sysop status gave her more "power" or "authority" to deal with Lir. Forgive me if I missed something, but last time I checked the sysop was an administrative status, and we do not have power to ban registered users, and the protecting of pages is very highly discouraged, so, I do not see where that "power" could come from; unless now the title "Sysop" now has some hidden significance. And I remember also that trying to use "Sysop" as a title was discouraged a while ago (Isn't that right, Uncle Ed?).
The only way that someone could be granted the power to deal with Lir and others would be investing them with a "Jimbo Walesship", and I haven't seen that happen.

Sysops have the power to delete and lock articles, effectively banning other editors if they so wish.
But you're right, it doesn't give them authority over other editors.

And, as a reminder, any other sysop can undo these.
Realistically, undoing deletion is very unlikely; the mechanisms for deleting articles are much easier to use than those for undeleting them. This is not to disparage the existence of page-restoration. We just shouldn't imply parity between the deletion and restoration functionality.

Do you have concrete ideas for improving the system?
For instance, revamping the deletion log to include links directly into the undelete system would be a big help; the generic list of all deleted pages isn't really easy to look through, as it doesn't keep track of how long ago deletions were performed and (so far) the rubbish bin has never been emptied.

As a practical matter some folks abuse their position and authority regardless of policy and Jimbo's good intentions.

That's basically right. What we want to preserve is the co-operative spirit, without an atmosphere of powerful people lording over the weak.
We *are* working on a way for sysops to ban registered users, but this power should only be used as usual, i.e. for banning "simple vandals". This change is coming about because we had a vandal last weekend who kept a lot of good people busy for a long time repairing damage.
