Yet again I have a journalist question: "How many editors are there on Wikipedia?"
I can't find any solid numbers on this. I recall a graph showing that activity per person is a power law graph, meaning there's no sharply-definable answer.
Does anyone have any idea?

Do you mean registered users or anons too? Also, do you want stats for English-language Wikipedia or Wikipedia as a whole?
Sadly, Erik Zachte's stats haven't been updated in 6 months. As of September 2006 there were 285866 registered Wikipedians (http://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/TablesWikipediaZZ.htm).

I don't mean usernames - that count is meaningless because of spambots and vandalbots. I mean how many actual people there are who could meaningfully be called editors.

Don't forget people who register just so they can change skins and other preferences but have no intention of editing anything. You can probably weed them out by subtracting the accounts with empty talk pages because welcome messages go on them the first time they edit.
Yes, but at least 250 of those were all Jon Awbrey, Jason Gastrich, and MyKungFu... etc.
