Interestingly, Britain and Ireland are considered part of Europe, even Iceland is, while Cuba is not considered part of North America.

Are you sure about that? The Cubans certainly consider themselves 'American', in the geographic sense - the state newspaper has a section entitled "Our America" or somesuch, IIRC, covering 'local international' issues, as it were (Central/Latin America, I guess).
