What's the best namespace or place to make a proposal that en:wp have a "random *featured* article" button?
As anyone who uses the random article link knows it often turns up places of small geographical interest. We now have a pretty damn good library of featured content. I'd really enjoy being able to pop a random featured article, knowing I was about to see some of the best we have to offer.
The downside, of course, is that it could further clutter an already fairly busy interface; so perhaps this could be switched on in preferences? Or alternatively perhaps the feature could be made available from a button that only appears when you visit a certain page?

It shouldn't be too difficult to take the list of FAs and have one chosen at random when a button is pressed. It should be linked on the featured article page, not on the interface.

Yay! Absolutely excellent. I had wanted Good Articles too but didn't want to ask for too much.
They're perfect and duly bookmarked.
Thanks very much!

It's essentially already there in the sidebar (3rd link down): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Featured_content randomized Featured article, Featured List, Featured picture, Featured topic, Featured portal, Featured sound. plus a list of content that recently attained Featured-status.
For FA/FL, it even loads a small excerpt, so you don't have the wait for a large article to load before deciding you would like a different selection.

As Quiddity pointed out, we have this random featured article feature already. Question is, why is it not obvious? Does it need to made clearer that we already have this? To be fair, I was unaware of the toolserver ones. Is that something different, meaning we have *two* ways to access a random featured article? Are there differences?

The portal doesn't select from all featured articles, only those that have been on the main page. I do agree that the Featured Content portal is under-promoted though (in fact portals generally are)

Yes, I don't really understand the decision taken on en not to show portals on article pages. On fr, for example, if you read a chemistry article, there's a "Chemistry Portal" banner at the bottom of the page. It works quite well.
On en, I can't think of any path I'm ever likely to take that would lead me to one of the portals. Which really is a pity.

They seems to be relatively widespread, though I wonder if it's just that some projects like them and some don't.
(Some of them are pretty odd, though - Apollo 11 links you to the "Houston portal")

Whoops, I stand corrected. Still a bit subtle though.

I would support more use of the more unknown featured content on the main page, such as featured portals, and featured topics. But the current design is hard to get changed to include that sort of thing. You either have to change the grid of four main areas, or introduce rotation.

I have a standing offer to assist the conversion of "featured pictures" to "featured media" so that it highlights sounds as well as images. There appears to be a moderate but surmountable obstacle with the monthly roster template; Howcheng knows the details.
In order to facilitate the change with minimal inconvenience to anyone else, I would withdraw my own featured pictures from the main page queue. Now that museum partnerships have developed to where institutions are providing material upon request that offer would need to be modified. But basically no other featured picture contributor would need to wait much longer for a turn on the main page.
If the community supports this shift it would help the featured sounds program.
Also, there is an ongoing problem with removal of featured pictures from articles. The only way to tell that an image is featured is by clicking in at the file hosting page. Many editors never check, which means that on a somewhat random basis featured pictures get taken out or replaced with lower quality material. (This is the media corrolary to featured articles deteriorating from brilliant prose into mediocre prose). If the community approved a featured star display for caption boxes the problem would decrease significantly, and casual readers would have the advantage of a cue to the site's best illustrations. Non-featured pictures are rarely worth a view at full resolution, but featured pictures reward a close examination.

Proposed by Durova: Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Featured content stars for featured pictures
Inoffensive? To some, not to others.

Probably (without looking at the discussion) the same objections as for photographer credits or an "more information" link next to pictures. Or, even, the objections people raise to having featured articles marked with a star.
