Since some people on this mailing list have previously asked to be made aware of polls on the wiki, here is a new one. It addresses what links to remove from the sidebar so we can add a link to the Community Portal page. It's actually a revised and restarted version of the old poll, which ended up being too confusing and did not have a clear result. I hadn't followed this debate until now. Some people have other things to do. But I see that the vote avoids the whole issue of alternatives to having a "Community Portal" page at all.

Such as, for example?

Such as merging the community portal with the main page. We don't need the news section there; this is an encyclopedia, not a newspaper.

This doesn't strike me as a particularly widely-wanted change.

The Main Page is specifically not an encyclopedic article. True, we are not a newspaper, but there is no reason to not have a little section that points at articles that are relevant to recent happenings. It shows visitors how up to date we are!

I don't see how one could prove that the current style of Main Page is _necessary_; but it looks pretty _useful_ to me. Kudos to those who work on it.

True, we are not a newspaper, but I suspect that I'm in the vast majority when I say that I often get my daily background information about what's going on in the news from Wikipedia's homepage.
I learned a lot about Basque separatists and ETA and so on in the past two days. I read a lot about the South Korean impeachment.
The "In the news" feature on the homepage is one of the best things that we do, in my opinion.

I have no interest in belaboring the issue, and will keep quiet after this letter. I would prefer something like the layout that is being used on fr where the two immediately apparent boxes are the encyclopedia topics, and the recent news section. As long as we are an encyclopedia, that point needs to be made prominent.
