Perhaps we should TfD {{spoiler}}. I think it has enough support now.
The MFD is heated enough. Let's wait until that one finishes. Besides, if it doesn't interfere with good writing, the template can still have solid uses (on soon to be released material and very recent stuff most people wouldn't want spoiled) See Johnleemk's comment above. Deleting the entire template without discussing changes would be premature.

Does an ARC count as a reliable source? I have one for the latest Bujold sitting on my table right now, and I know that if I didn't and somebody just splurged the plot details without warning me, I would be very cross indeed.
This of course raises the question of context: there's a whole difference between revealing the plot twist of a book on the article for the book itself and doing the same on the article for the author: the former is entirely expectable and avoidable: the latter is just plain rude.
We need to find a balance between being helpful and informative and being just plain rude.

Reliable, yes, but not verifiable. This is a particular problem for something like Harry Potter, where there are a ridiculously large number of rumors and false leads as well.
