Perhaps something for en.wp to emulate: de.wikipedia has recently started a new type of writing contest where two contestants challenge each other to write the equivalent of a "good article" in de.wp:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Achim_Raschka/Spielkiste
A more or less random user is selected to choose a topic to write about (can be anything). The contestants then can choose a specific article they want to start / bring to "good article" quality. Whoever's article is declared to be of the necessary quality first through the usual community review process, wins the duel. There is a ranking of the "players" who have won the most competitions.
The game was started in June and seems to be quite popular already.

Long as it doesn't turn into a popularity contest, sounds like a good idea. Someone be bold and start it! ~~~~

Given the issues this would likely produce with [[WP:OWN]] I think care should be taken before jumping in.

Apparently de-wikipedia either doesn't have that problem or already solved
it. What worries me more is people who start edit wars on purpose to make one of the duelists lose because they spend too much time resolving a dispute instead of writing.

How does the de.wiki deal with WP:OWN issues that are likely to arise as a result of these contests?

No idea, but I would've expected the contest to have died out if something like would be able to break it.

What exactly is the WP:OWN issue? I assume the articles are still free for anyone to edit during the contest.

I would think you're right, and, IMO, the issue of people THINKING they own the article wouldn't be any greater than people thinking they own any article they decide they're improving to FA/GA status. People do think that now, but it's not really a huge problem, they just need to be told they're violating WP:OWN and generally that solves the problem. The same could be done in this contest, as long as the contest rules had a bit about allowing others to edit. Then again, we currently have people who demand that articles they often edit be semiprotected so the "vandals" (often good faith IP users who aren't familiar with our policies) can't edit it, and they could be a slight problem (as they are now).

There's two kinds of ownership. One is paternal, one is possessive. "That's my article, I created it, I'm very pleased with it" vs. "That's my article, get your hands off it"
The former is what contests like this tend to create, and it's harmless (and in many ways to be encouraged). I'm not sure a contest like this would produce the latter any more than the normal article-rating process does...

I agree; any increase in articles being improved to G/FA status would increase WP:OWN problems, and this contest wouldn't do it more than, say, a big push to 2000 FAs that was advertised everywhere (though this contest might be more effective, and so would create proportionally more problems).
Rory
The difference is that this contest is individual. You get an individual "reward" for creating the best article, and if someone arrives and you feel he messes up (albeit in good faith), WP:OWN may be something to be more cautious of than when promoting regular articles to GA/FA status (which is generally done collaboratively). Note that I support the idea and don't think this will be a major problem, but it might be good to overlook it first.
