What about requiring an edit summary for major edits, and not requiring one if the minor edit box is checked?
Danny
Unless there is a byte counter married with the diff that would only encourage people to mark moderate and major edits as minor. Vera Cruz already marks all edits as minor and this is *VERY* annoying.

I've seen that and it annoys me just as much. One solution there might be to remove the preference to "Mark all edits minor by default". If she has that set it would explain why all her edits are minor.

Adding the preference setting "All edits minor by default" was a hasty decision.

It can be handy if one is making a great many minor changes (eg mass spelling, formatting, or link fixes). Here's a thought; what if we can make it only stick to a single session?
(On the other hand, it's not hard to train oneself to hit tab-space after the summary.)

I've started doing this. Having to reach for the mouse to check the box was a pain. (yes, I know Orto will say "it's only 2 seconds". But I think we're seeing evidence of differences in personality type. I'm very much a "do six things at once, arg, why can't things go faster" sort of person. An extra action bugs me, it might not bug Orto)
I still think that for registered users, comment boxes should be recommended -- not compulsory.
(though if a dialog box popped up on submitting the form, it would save me a press of the TAB key. I'd gain a whole 1.5 seconds of life over the course of a week!!!! no, don't do that. I'm kidding :-)

Orto doesn't believe it is an "extra" action, Orto believes it is "documentation" and thus an essential part of what you are doing.

Certainly recommended, not compulsory, but take "Votes for Deletion", for example. Isn't the value of another person's contribution there either worth less or more trouble if it lacks a summary comment? Doesn't the same go for any article that one is interested in?
That cranky guy, Orto

The option is useful for copyeditors. Vera Cruz is Lir's new account name, and he/she has been doing this before the option even existed.
